Learning Stewards
Changing how we think about learning can change how we learn about everything.
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The common ways we think about and talk about learning are in and of themselves learning disabling. We constantly use words and terms to refer to learning that hides the role of learning. Words like Imprinting, Socialization, Brainwashing, Propaganda, Inculcation, Habituation, Conditioning, Exposure, Acquisition, Absorbing, Develop, Mature, Evolve, Bloom, Ripen, Raised, Brought up, Parented, Schooled, Taught Influenced, Shaped, Guided, Molded, Programmed and terms like Led to believe, Grew up believing, Raised to believe, Brought up to believe, Keep an open mind, Listen carefully, Pay attention, How do you know, Allow me to explain. By disavowing the broader role of learning through our language, we create a self-imposed learning disability. We miss out on appreciating the vast ways in which learning shapes our identities, relationships, and interactions with the world. We attribute its effects to external factors, neglecting the intricate and internal dance of becoming.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
OLSN the Online Learning Support Net
The Online Learning Support Net (OLSN) is a technology that makes every word in any digital text its own instant, on-demand, help button. Touching or clicking any word immediately launches the OLSN Pop-Up. The pop-up is a small window that appears adjacent to the selected word and which contains a series of visual and audible animations that guide learners through recognizing the word while also helping to improve their reading skills in general. For words they recognize but don’t understand, a second layer of reference support is available via the “Word Explore” button. Word Explorer provides definitions, synonyms, roots, and translations.
OLSN provides a radically new and more neurologically efficient way to guide and support beginning and struggling readers. Rather than using abstract exercises to train beginning and struggling readers (like all other reading instructional methods), I/O provides reading instruction and support on the live edge of reading. Our technology supports struggling readers on virtually any device, regardless of their current reading skill, age, grade, or content area. For beginning readers, I/O acts like “Training Wheels” that safely guide them through learning the foundational elements required for fluent reading. For those who struggle and no longer receive reading instruction, I/O provides a “safety net” that improves their reading abilities while enabling them to learn from materials otherwise beyond their reading abilities.
OLSN is available in two ‘products’: 1) The Magic Ladder Library (https://mlc.learningstewards.org/) —an evolving library of curated beginning reading materials, and 2) OLSN Chrome (https://mlc.learningstewards.org/olsn/) —a browser extension that provide OLSN support to any page running in the browser.
Children of the Code Project
The Children of the Code Project is a ‘case in point’ for how poorly our society understands learning and the personal and societal costs of unhealthy learning. Consisting of over 100 interviews with field leading scientists and scholars the COTC project has produced over 140 video segments that cover subjects ranging from the origin of writing to the neurology involved in producing the virtual language experience we call reading.
The Children of the Code is a project of Learning Stewards a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. Founded in 2008, its mission is to ‘make the case’ (economically, politically, socially, neurologically, psychologically, educationally, parentally) for “stewarding the health of our children’s learning”.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
To change how people think about learning! Instead of thinking of learning as an ancillary mental utility, people need to understand it as the central dynamic of being human - the dynamic of human becoming from conception to death.
We are working with people around the world to develop new ways to catalyze dialogue that focuses on changing how people think about learning. We are involved in a w3c group on redesigning the WWW. And international ethics group on ethical organization.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We write articles and posts, conduct and give interviews, produce videos and speak at public events all to change how people think about learning. For examples: https://learningstewards.org/cant-help-but-learn/ https://learningstewards.org/implicate-order-learning/Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/episode/35RDWgnsQJZpwmNPrArOZe? Video: https://learningstewards.org/dialogue-johnson3/
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a team of volunteers that includes writers, graphic artists, videographers, video editors, web services, and software architects.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have created hundreds of videos, many of which are used in college courses. We have 3 major websites that support learners from around the world,
