Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Our major operating programs include establishing a regional museum, publishing significant historical information of local interest, developing and maintaining a large collection of oral histories and photographs of pioneers and descendants of pioneer families as well as immigrant communities, and helping to maintain the historic WWI memorial highway (Des Moines Memorial Boulevard) and monument located in Burien, Washington.
Highline Garden Tour
This tour of area lovely gardens is a collaboration between the Society and Discover Burien (chamber of Commerce), the SeaTac Highline Botannical Garden and the Soroptomist Club. All assist with this fundraising event, which provides several thousand dollars for our operations.
Salute to Pioneers
This is an annual program, a facilitate panel comprised of long time residents of the area. A sample topic for a program might be "What did You Do during WWII?" or "Visiting the Airport in the 1950's." This year's topics will be "Sports!" and will discuss the rise of various Little Leagues, and speak with long time school coaches, talk about church basketball leagues, etc. They are always well attended. We film them and will be able to use excerpts in our new museum. We will be doing our 18th Salute this year.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The goals of the Highline Historical Society are 1.) to build our museum, 2.) to continue to professionalize our operations and 3.)to increase our Board of Trustees membership to more accurately reflect the demographics of our communities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1. We have just received our building permit for the construction of the Highline Heritage Museum. Groundbreaking will be scheduled when we feel we are financially and organizationally ready to proceed.
2. We now have an outside bookkeeper, an annual audit, a professional Curator of Collections and the Board and staff are completing a self analysis produced by the American Association of State and Local History to prepare us to operate a regional museum.
3. We now have a Nominating Committee that is vetting a list of potential Trustees and will begin discussions with them soon to expand our board to better reflect our entire community.
