Mission

Northwest Access Fund offers people with disabilities customized loans, financial coaching, and other resources to promote access to assistive technology, independence, financial resilience, and life opportunities. Northwest Access Fund offers a range of financial services to meet the unique needs of the disability community, all premised on the notion that everyone should have access to affordable assistive technology (AT) and economic opportunity. Our programs are open to all people with all types of disabilities, but they are designed to meet the needs of low-income people with disabilities.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Assistive Technology Loan Program

Northwest Access Fund's most longstanding program is the AT Loan Program, through which we offer loans of up to $40,000 with up to a 10-year term to people with disabilities to purchase AT. AT - such as hearing aids, wheelchairs, and modified vehicles - is vital for people to live independently, to pursue an education, and to obtain employment. However, AT is expensive and is often not covered by insurance or grant sources and furthermore, AT is only one of the additional expenses that people with disabilities face. Our loan helps clients, who are often on a fixed income, meet these costs in a way that also allows them to build toward a stable financial future.

Northwest Access Fund launched financial capability services in 2016, providing low-income people with disabilities one-on-one financial coaching, benefits planning, group financial workshops, and a credit-building Opportunity Loan. All services are free to clients.

As a small nonprofit, we strive to develop and adapt our programs to meet the emerging needs of our community. In March 2020, we incorporated a Resilience Loan into our Financial Capability Services for those who have lost employment or income during the COVID-19 outbreak. The 0% interest, no fee loan allows for a deferred first payment, allowing clients to meet basic needs including housing, food, and healthcare until they are able to return to employment.
