SPAY AND NEUTER ABANDONED CATS AND KITTENS INC
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our organization is working to reduce feline overpopulation by supporting low-cost spay neuter and continuing with our trap/neuter/return program. We believe that by making these services accessible and affordable, they will get involved and get their cats (pets, strays and community cats) spayed or neutered.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Trap/Neuter/Return
At the request of a client, our Trap/Neuter/Return program volunteers humanely trap community cats, take them for spay/neuter surgery and a rabies vaccination, and return the cats to the client. There are no income requirements for our services. We ask for a commitment from the client to provide basic food, water, and shelter to the community cats.
Foster Cat/Kitten Program
In our foster cat/kitten program, cats or kittens that cannot be returned to a colony caregiver are placed for adoption to a home. The reasons a cat may not be returned can include such factors as age, health issues such as blindness, or danger to the cat. For this program, we require the cats/kittens to be tested for Feline leukemia and feline immunodefiency virus (FIV). In addition, they must be fully vaccinated and wormed and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. The program depends on our availability of foster homes for the cats/kittens.
Fix-It Days (Spay Days)
In 2017, we had monthly community fix-it days at the Fredericktown Vet Clinic and 3 fix-it days using the Rascal Mobile Clinic (based in Columbus). Three of the Rascal Days were held with the Humane Society of Morrow County.
During these fix-it day, a person could have their cat spayed/neutered for $25. The price is now $35. The cat also received a one-year rabies vaccination and flea/ear mite treatment if needed. There is no income requirement for participation in the fix-it days. There is also no geographic restriction for participation.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal and mission of the organization is to reduce the number of cats euthanized at local shelters by providing individuals with a low-cost option of spay/neuter. We hope the local community will take advantage of this service and get cats spayed/neutered to reduce the number of free kittens and incidents where cats are "dumped" at shelters or in the countryside because they are unwanted. Limiting the overpopulation of cats also promotes the humane treatment of those cats in the community. Ultimately, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of spaying/neutering pets, not just cats.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategy is two-fold. First we will continue with low-cost spay/neuter clinics for the cats. This allows people of all income levels to get their cats fixed. Reducing the overpopulation of cats helps the community health/sanitation and helps to preserve native wildlife. When community cats are cared for (food/shelter/water/sterilization), the cats are less likely to hunt for their food. Second, we will continue with our trap/neuter/return efforts. This allows for colony caregivers to take care of their cats and ensure their cats' health through spaying/neutering. With these two avenues in play, we hope to build a better appreciation for many societal benefits associated with getting cats "fixed."
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
As the group has progressed since our founding in 2011, we have built a broader funding structure. We are capable of bigger fundraisers such as a wine tasting/silent auctions rather than smaller events like craft shows. As word has spread of our activities, we have attracted more donors and more support. The pandemic has affected our fundraising strategies so that currently, we are relying more on our donors/supporters.
We expect to continue our monthly fix-it days through 2022 at least and have scheduled mobile spay/neuter clinics with the Dublin-based Rascal Unit to broaden our impact. In terms of volunteers, we have grown from 4 volunteers in 2011 to about 20 currently. We hope to maintain/nurture these relationships and continue to expand our capacity, especially in trap/neuter/return program and in the area of the mobile clinics.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since the organization was formed, we have supported over 4000 spay/neuter surgeries for cats. Most have been through our low cost clinics. We have raised awareness of spay/neuter and trap/neuter/return as humane ways of dealing with cat overpopulation.
We have had cooperation from the Humane Society of Morrow County to help bring in a mobile clinic to Morrow County. Now, that county has their own spay/neuter days for cats with the mobile clinic. We are also hoping to partner with the Humane Society of Richland County next year to offer a mobile clinic in that community as well.
Much of our progress in mission goals will depend on availability of a mobile clinic and on the coronavirus pandemic and its progression/end.
