What we aim to solve
Since 1978, STAR has been responding to the needs of survivors of sexual assault, while integrating prevention and education programs with a goal of reducing harm to all Alaskans.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Prevention & Education
We have a number of age-appropriate presentations (preschool-12th) available to be given at your child’s school. Presentations provide personal safety and sexual violence information as well as resources and skill building. STAR is very careful with the material brought into schools, utilizing information geared to the child’s age and development. All curricula are reviewed and approved by the Anchorage School District.

All Alaskans live free of sexual trauma
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Standing Together Against Rape (STAR) is an organization dedicated to ending sexual violence in the state of Alaska. To achieve this, STAR’s strategies include the following:
Education and Awareness:
STAR provides educational presentations for youth and adults in Alaska about sexual violence, its impact, and ways to prevent it. This is delivered in Anchorage School District classrooms, adult education in workplaces and community groups, and by participating in health and safety events.
Advocacy:
STAR advocates for policies and laws that help prevent sexual violence, protect survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable.
Support for Survivors:
STAR provides comprehensive support for survivors of sexual violence. This includes a 24-7 free and confidential crisis line, immediate crisis response, medical exam and court accompaniment, trauma therapy, legal advocacy, referrals and other long-term support services.
Community Engagement:
STAR collaborates with local organizations to build a network of support for survivors and promote prevention of sexual violence. This includes organizing events and campaigns, and partnering with local businesses and organizations to advance awareness and prevention.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
With the dedication and determination of our staff, volunteers and community supporters, we continue working toward a safer Alaska by providing education and awareness about sexual assault through school-based programs, community outreach, and professional training.
STAR also offers a 24-hour crisis hotline and advocacy services for survivors of sexual assault. Additionally, STAR provides medical advocacy for survivors undergoing forensic exams and legal advocacy to assist them in navigating the criminal justice system.
Another capability of STAR is its collaboration with law enforcement agencies, medical professionals, and other service providers to ensure a coordinated response to sexual assault in Alaska. STAR also engages in policy advocacy and legislative efforts to improve the response to sexual assault and to hold perpetrators accountable.
Overall, STAR's capabilities are focused on providing comprehensive support to survivors of sexual assault, preventing sexual assault through education and awareness, and advocating for systemic change to end sexual violence in Alaska.
