What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Lands Conservation
Our Land Conservation Program protects key lands: old growth forests, pristine tributaries and sub-basins, and open spaces that contribute to restoring the health and resiliency of the Mattole River ecosystem. The conservation of land in perpetuity is at the very heart of Sanctuary Forest’s mission as a land trust. To fulfill this goal, our Lands Program works in two main areas: the direct purchase (fee-title acquisition) of key properties in the Mattole River watershed, to be owned and actively stewarded by Sanctuary Forest or one of our public or non-profit partners. The second is through Conservation Easements, whereby Sanctuary Forest partners with private landowners who voluntarily put in place restrictions on rights of use of their property. Once conserved, Sanctuary Forest works with private, non-profit, and public partners to actively steward these lands for increased habitat health and resiliency -this includes upgrading roads, improving fish habitat, forest health, and more.
Water Stewardship Program
Sanctuary Forest is addressing water shortages in the Mattole River using four main approaches: water storage and forbearance, stream flow monitoring, groundwater recharge projects and public education.
Education and Outreach Program
Our Education & Outreach Program promotes appreciation, respect and understanding for the uniqueness of the Mattole temperate rain forest ecosystem and building a community with strong conservation ethics.
We accomplish this with five main approaches: our annual hike program, our scholarship program, our quarterly radio shows on KMUD, participating in the Nick’s Interns program that is administered by BLM, and stewardship education through community meetings and workshops.
Collaboration Program
Collaboration has been an integral part of Sanctuary Forest’s identity since it’s inception in 1987, when people from diverse backgrounds joined together to protect the last remaining old-growth in the Mattole watershed. Since then, collaboration has only grown in importance. From brainstorming conference calls to visioning workshops along the river, Sanctuary Forest finds inspiration, scientific and technical support and much more through collaborating with our many partners and community members.
