Mission

The mission of the Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank, Inc. (PCCFB, Inc.) is to serve individuals and families who are experiencing food insecurity. It's vision statement is as follows. The PCCFB, Inc. recognizes the innate worth of every human being, accepts people as they are, and seeks to assist them in receiving necessary food to support their daily nutritional needs.

Notes from the nonprofit

The PCCFB expands its reach by donating food to several mission aligned partners. For the Point in Time homeless count in January 2023, it provided 200 bags of food, water, hygiene products, and information about the Cupboard. Through its partnership with the Prescott Public Library 441 pounds of food were distributed. Twice a month the PCCFB also provides the U.S. Vets Outreach Coordinator with 12 bags of food for homeless vets. In 2023, it delivered 2,253 pounds of food to Calvary Chapel New Day Church in Wilhoit for the churchs food pantry. It provides food to several other organizations including Coalition for Compassion and Justice (645 pounds), Mayer Senior Center (618 pounds), and Prescott Area Shelter Services (587 pounds). These activities are all part of fulfilling its mission of combatting food insecurity in Yavapai County.

Prescott Community Cupboard Food Bank, Inc. (PCCFB, Inc.)

The PCCFB, inc. is a volunteer run program supported by two full-time and two part-time staff. Volunteers purchase food, pick up donated products from grocery stores and restaurants, and pack food bags. In 2023, 209 volunteers contributed 10,930 hours valued at $347,574. Prepacked bags include ingredients for 24 balanced meals. Patrons may also have a free choice shop for fresh produce, bread, and dairy. The foodbank is the only Yavapai County foodbank open six days a week including two evenings and Saturdays to serve the working poor. In 2023, adults with or without children comprised 61% of clients, children 26%, and seniors 13%. Last year, the Cupboard distributed 15,839 bags of food or 201,080 pounds to 35,916 people. It also provides food to other basic needs programs in Yavapai County to achieve its mission.

The PCCFB, Inc.s mission is to serve individuals and families who are experiencing food insecurity. The PCCFB, Inc. recognizes the innate worth of every human being, accepts people as they are, and seeks to assist them in receiving necessary food to support their daily nutritional needs. It has grown from a temporary food source for Prescott residents to a Yavapai County institution that serves the entire county. In the past year it has achieved the goals and objectives outlined below.

Its overarching goal is to serve more individuals and families experiencing food insecurity in Yavapai County by achieving the following goals.

Goal 1. Expand program operations to feed more people experiencing food insecurity.
Objective 1: Purchase additional food supplies (proteins, pantry staples, fresh produce, baked goods, diapers, T.P. and other necessities) to meet the growing demand.
Objective 2: Pursue more in-kind food donations.
Objective 3: Expand fresh food offerings, especially fresh dairy products for children.
Objective 4: Extend operating hours to include some weekday evenings and weekends.

Goal 2. Implement fund development plan to raise funds for food purchases, new building renovations and equipment.
Objective 1: Write grants to fund food purchases and other needs.
Objective 2: Solicit corporate sponsors to provide in-kind donations of new equipment, labor, and materials.
Objective 3: Solicit individual donations for food purchases, building renovations and new equipment through the PCCFB Inc.s year-end annual campaign.

Goal 3. Increase the PCCFB Inc.'s organizational capacity.
Objective 1: Continue modernization and upgrades from paper-based operating systems to computer-based systems.
Objective 2: Install security systems and modify pick up procedures to improve building security.
Objective 3: Improve internal communications for volunteers and external communications for clients, funders, and community stakeholders.
Objective 4: Expand donor recognition on-site at the PCCFB Inc. program location and on social media.

The PCCFB Inc. uses several fundraising strategies to achieve its goals. These include pursuing grants from private and public sources as well as corporate sponsorships and in-kind donations of food from area restaurants and grocery stores. Every year it conducts a year-end annual (November February) campaign promoting the availability of income tax credits for Arizona taxpayers capitalizing on the PCCFCBs recognition by the Arizona Department of Revenue as an Arizona Qualifying Charitable Organization (QCO # 20220). This status enables Arizona taxpayers to claim a tax credit of up to $421 for an individual head of household and $842 for a married couple filing jointly on their Arizona state income tax. The PCCFB Inc. also pursues bequests and is using the fiscal management resources of the Arizona Community Foundation Yavapai County to help manage its endowment.

In 2022 it expanded its hours to include two evenings a week and Saturday making the Cupboard accessible to the working poor. It has successfully pursued grant funds to install an awning on two sides of the building to protect its clients from the elements. It has restored the buildings walk-in cooler, significantly increasing cold food storage. This improvement enabled the PCCFB to increase the amount of fresh produce and dairy it distributes to residents challenged by food insecurity. It received funds from the Del E. Webb Foundation to purchase an AED, commercial first aid kit, additional fire extinguishers and indoor/outdoor security cameras to enhance safety and security for its volunteers and clients. Staff and key volunteers received CPR training and training on using the AED.

It created a new Facebook/Meta page and upgraded its website to recognize its funders and provides links to basic needs resources in Yavapai County. It recently purchased and installed a new system, Pantry Saver. Pantry Saver was developed by food pantry professionals in a foodbank setting with the goal to not only make it easier to run a successful pantry, but also serve clients with dignity. Pantry Saver enables foodbanks to meet reporting requirements of the U.S. Department of Agricultures Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program.

In 2023, St. Marys Foodbank approved the Cupboards application making the PCCFB a purchasing partner with Feeding America through St. Marys. In approving the application St. Marys said the PCCFB would be THE MODEL foodbank they would site as an example to other foodbanks for order and cleanliness. This new partnership allows the PCCFB to save money on many staples it used to buy at retail prices. St. Marys now makes weekly deliveries to the Cupboard reducing the amount of staple pantry items volunteers and staff must purchase from local retailers. Both PCCFBs volunteers and clients benefit from this partnership with St. Marys and Feeding America.

The PCCFB Inc. was founded in 1973 by local churches as a provisional food source for Prescott area residents experiencing food insecurity. It has grown to serve the entire county and become a Yavapai County institution. Volunteers staffing the food bank come from six area churches that helped found the PCCFB Inc. in 1973. These partners are:

Collectively these partners along with the PCCFB Inc. Community Volunteer team assist with administrative tasks, special events, serve as food packers assembling bags of food for individuals and families in need, and collect food donations and discounted groceries from suppliers like Safeway/Albertsons, Panera, and Krogers/Frys Foods. The PCCFB Inc.s newly installed volunteer Board of Directors has the skills and willingness to do the necessary work for achieving the organizations goals.

Because of its long-standing presence in the community and its reputation for inclusiveness the food bank has been the recipient of individual donations, gifts, and bequests. The PCCFB Inc. also enjoys strong support from local businesses that donate food. It will continue to tap these and other resources to accomplish its mission. These community resources, the leadership of the outgoing Board of Directors, and ongoing fundraising efforts enabled the PCCFB Inc. to achieve its 2021-2023 goals. Its incoming Board of Directors continues to move the organization forward. Installation and training of staff and volunteers on Pantry Saver is a significant opportunity to improve inventory control, client tracking and volunteer scheduling, increasing the Cupboard's organizational capacity.

With support from its full-time operations manager the Executive Committee makes certain the organization's governance and fiduciary responsibilities are met. The Secretary ensures minutes and other records of the organizations operations are archived. Working with the grant writer and operations manager the Treasurer maintains accounting records for grant funds, donations from individuals and corporations, balances in bank accounts and records of expenditures. The Treasurer chairs the Finance Committee and works with the Board to create an annual budget and to prepare and submit monthly budget reconciliation reports to the Board. Additionally, the Treasurer works with the PCCFB Inc.s accountant to ensure that state and federal tax reports are filed. The Board Chair and Vice-Chair provide leadership for the organization and serve as community ambassadors.

For fifty years the Cupboard has been operating a community foodbank for residents of Yavapai County. It enjoys community support from individuals and organizations who donate their money, time, and food products. Founded in 1973 by seven local churches as a temporary food source for Prescott area residents experiencing food insecurity. Its service area now covers the entire County. It distributes food at its Hillside location in Prescott, and through partnerships with other organizations such as Prescott Area Shelter Services, Mayer Senior Center and the Prescott Library.

In 2021, it successfully located, purchased, and renovated a larger building increasing its capacity to meet the growing need for emergency food. Since moving to the new location, the Cupboard has expanded its capacity to provide fresh nutritious food. For example, prior to 2022 it only distributed powdered milk, and had limited fresh produce donated by area grocery stores. Food waste was an issue due to the age of the donated produce and the Cupboards limited cold storage space. Support from funders allowed it to expand cold storage capacity. While its partnerships with organizations like Prescott Farmers Market have increased the quantity and quality of fresh produce it distributes. The Cupboard now has three freezers. It has gone from one donated home refrigerator to four refrigerated coolers, and in 2023 it repaired the buildings walk-in cooler. This increased cold storage capacity enables it to keep up with the growth in the total pounds of food distributed which is up 205% for the period November 2020 to December 2023. During the same period, the number of clients served rose 196%. Donations and grants have allowed it to purchase more fresh and nutritious food for distribution to Yavapai County residents challenged by food insecurity. The need for more refrigerated storage has grown commensurate with the demand for food. The walk-in cooler will help reduce food waste by extending the shelf life of perishable produce donations and purchases such as the 8,215 half gallons of milk required to meet 2024 demand.

As the volume of clients and food distributed has grown the Cupboard has moved from pen and paper systems to track clients and inventory. In 2024 it is implementing software specifically designed for foodbanks. Pantry Saver will enable the PCCFB to collect and report more information on food inventory and distribution as well as client demographics. Thus, increasing its already stellar track record of transparency and accountability to its supporters. Additional improvements made in the last six months include the installation of security cameras inside and outside of the building, and an electronic key card system to monitor building entry. These and other safety and security improvements (installation of more fire extinguishers, an AED, eye wash station and commercial first aid kits).
