What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

ScholarLeaders International addresses three primary problems. 1) ScholarLeaders addresses the problem of lack of funding for Majority World students of theological education by providing scholarships for their PhD studies. 2) ScholarLeaders addresses problems of long-term viability at Majority World seminaries by providing consulting support so that seminaries can create strategic financial, faculty, facility, and succession plans. 3) ScholarLeaders addresses the problem of strife between Muslims and Christians by providing a platform for academic dialogue and reconciliation. 4) ScholarLeaders addresses the problem of gender inequality by focusing on equipping women in theological education. 5) ScholarLeaders addresses the problem of the Majority World's marginalization in theological education by publishing the InSights Journal for Global Theological Education, which amplifies the voices of Majority World theological educators.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

ScholarLeaders International exists to encourage and enable indigenous Christians, women and men, as theological leaders. These leaders teach pastors and others to understand and apply Jesus' teachings in their unique contexts. They bring wise, visionary leadership to new and existing schools and ministries.

ScholarLeaders invests in the most promising indigenous Christian theological leaders in the Majority World to enable these wise women and men to focus on issues of greatest opportunity and need. They, in turn, train and encourage other leaders. ScholarLeaders also consults with indigenous leaders of theological institutions to help them develop strategic long-term plans for institutional stability.

For over 30 years, ScholarLeaders has identified and supported some of the brightest Christian theological leaders from around the world, enabling them to obtain PhDs. They have gone on to form and guide new ministries and institutions that develop the Church and its leaders in their own countries. ScholarLeaders also employs the former president of a top African theological institution and a team of regional consultants who work with Majority World theological institutions.

ScholarLeaders currently supports 56 leaders from 28 countries for study at 33 institutions in 17 countries. Thanks to new PhD programs at Majority World schools and new models of doctoral training, many are able to remain active in ministry while pursuing studies at the highest levels. ScholarLeaders plans to expand its work with Majority World schools of theological education into several new cohorts in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
