What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Sunshine Band

Kid Stock's flagship after-school program explores the ins and outs of creating a musical theater show, from inception to script workshop to stage. The fall program focuses on show building and includes drama workshops that allow kids to explore creativity through story telling. By the end of the semester, the kids' ideas are turned into a script. In spring, the script is fully staged with a full cast.

Not many people have put together a play in just three weeks—much less a musical—but for hundreds of kids across the Bay Area, it’s their favorite summer activity! Summer Stock Theater Camps give children the platform to express themselves, make new friends, and learn the ins and outs of musical theater. Each camp selects a play from our archive, and our instructors and volunteers help campers big and small bring the story to life through workshops in song, dance, drama, and art. At the end of the three weeks, we bring the show to the stage, complete with set pieces, costumes, props, sound and lighting!

After-school programming serves as a creative outlet for students who take a particular interest in the performing arts. Our typical after-school program operates on a two semester structure, fall and spring, with 8-12 two-hour rehearsals, once a week, each semester. Rehearsals include rotating workshops in song, dance, and drama as well as full cast activities.

OUR PROCESS:
We use a rotating workshop format to allow all students to experience a balance of lessons in drama, song, and dance. Students spend 15-30 minutes working on each performance area before reconvening with the group at the end of the rehearsal. We use this format as a guideline, but with all artistic work, it often fluctuates weekly to meet the needs of the specific students we serve.

Each school has different needs, and that’s why Kid Stock customizes its programs for each unique partner. We currently operate five in-school and nine after-school programs in partnership with local schools and community centers. While our partnership programs are all alike in their overall goal—building self-esteem and social-emotional competence through musical theater—we adapt the format to best serve our partners’ needs. Some request preschool music classes, while others hire our company to direct a big showstopper for the holidays. Whether it’s a full-on musical or skill-building workshop, we adapt our format to provide a program perfectly suited to your students.

Our typical in-school program includes weekly classes, which are based on a uniquely designed course of instruction that blends our mission with key California curriculum standards in drama, dance, and music. Working closely with school administrators and teachers, we ensure that students no only learn skills in each subject but also explore their creativity through self-expression. Most often, our in-school lessons occur in conjunction with an on-site after-school drama program; in this case, each class performs a song and dance number during the show, while the after-school drama students comprise the show’s cast of characters.
