Mission

Our mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of cats and dogs through rescue, spay/neuter and education programs. Hopalong focuses on intervening before an animal reaches the shelter and also rescues animals who would otherwise be euthanized at shelters due to pet overpopulation. Since 1993, Hopalong has rescued approximately 28,000 animals.

Rescue, Foster & Adoption

The purpose of Hopalong’s Rescue, Foster, and Adoption Program is to re-home cats and dogs that are at high risk of being euthanized in Bay Area shelters due to over-crowding.

Rescue: We partner with area shelters to rescue the most vulnerable animals who cannot be maintained in shelters due to the special care they require. Our program’s goal is to reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters by servicing as many animals as we have the financial, and volunteer resources to help.

Foster: Our volunteer-based Foster Program places animals rescued from shelters into to foster homes to provide care, socialization, and love while the animal awaits a spay/neuter surgery, medical attention, or training so that they are prepared for a forever home placement.

Adoption: Our Adoption Program matches a rehabilitated rescue animal with a responsible, forever guardian.

We carefully interview potential adopters to ensure that the right match is made. Too often dogs and cats end up in shelters because they were never a good match for their previous home in the first place. At Hopalong & Second Chance, we look for people who are committed to providing a home for the life of the dog or cat.

o Hopalong’s Pet Survivor Coverage Program
Established by Hopalong in 2001, the Pet Survivor Program (PSP), formerly known as HARPS, is a formal arrangement between Hopalong and pet owners. The plan becomes effective when a pet’s owner passes away or becomes incapacitated. In such an event, we will step in based on their planned bequest, and make sure that their furry family members are cared for and placed in loving homes. We then become the pet’s guardian and advocate.
Many animals end up in shelters and are needlessly euthanized because their owners didn’t plan for their care after they are unable to provide it. The goals of the PSP program are two-fold: to ensure that your beloved pet never ends up in a shelter, and to give peace of mind to participants at a time when they are coping with difficult life decisions. We are able to help what are often senior or special-needs animals using the resources provided by PSP participants, coupled with the great network of foster homes and adopters who recognize the wonderful attributes of senior animals.

Population(s) Served

Each year, thousands of unwanted kittens and puppies end up in shelters because people cannot afford to spay or neuter their pets.
Hopalong Animal Rescue offers pet owners with financial need the opportunity to have their pet spayed or neutered for free or at low cost, depending on their household income.
Our cost to spay or neuter is cats $60*, Dogs $100*. Low-income pet owners pay a portion of those costs depending on their household income.
*additional costs may be incurred if your pet is in heat or exceeds 75lbs.
