What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Orthopedic Primary Care

Orthopedic Primary Care (OPC) describes the treatment of patients whose musculoskeletal problems don’t need a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. The OPC curriculum was developed because numerous studies reveal that most primary care clinicians lack adequate preparation to effectively treat common conditions such as neck and low back pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and repetitive stress injuries.

Combining online didactic instruction with weekend intensive workshops, OPC covers fundamentals of anatomy, pathophysiology, and evidence-based treatment for common musculoskeletal conditions, as well as opportunities to practice clinical skills including, physical examination; x-ray & MRI interpretation; casting & splinting; joint aspiration and injections; and prescribing DME and exercise.

The 6-week program is designed to provide undergraduate college students with a clinical immersion experience in healthcare. It offers plentiful opportunities to explore career options while shadowing experienced providers as they treat patients. Whether prospective interns are interested in becoming a nurse, physician, physician assistant, or a physical or occupational therapist, they will have the opportunity to gain insight into the unique aspects of a variety of professional healthcare roles and inter-specialty collaboration.

Throughout the program, we emphasize musculoskeletal health, focusing on conditions affecting the bones, muscles and joints. Students learn basic anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and present case studies based on their shadowing experiences during weekly conferences with each other in guided, group-learning sessions. We encourage teamwork and professional collaboration among interns.

The program requires that prospective interns be available three days each week (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) throughout the duration of the program. One day per week, most likely Monday, will be devoted to a weekly conference day, and two other days will be devoted to shadowing clinical preceptors in their work environments. We aim to be flexible with interns’ summer school and work commitments so students are able to get the most from this unique opportunity while maintaining ongoing commitments outside the program.
