What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Although MCTA has Programs and activities to support our local theatre community and has been in existence for more than 34 years, our main problem is visibility and outreach to our community. Our theatre-going community appears to be unaware of the benefits and opportunities MCTA offers, e.g. reduced theatre ticket prices, technical theatre training, and scholarships. In 2020 we successfully implemented a new Oral History Program, Saving Monterey County Theatre History, which will continue into 2021. Finding volunteers to support this and other MCTA activities is our current challenge. We also partnered with two of local small producers to produce small on-line productions of new work.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Hands-On Technical Theatre Workshops

A big challenge for our local theaters is finding experienced theatrical technicians. MCTA’s MC Gives! Big Idea is to develop a Program to facilitate a series of Technical Theater seminars, with hands-on training by experienced professionals conducted at various theaters throughout Monterey County. Individuals of all ages will have the opportunity to work side by side with experienced technicians during multiple live performances and learn essential theater operations.

Population(s) Served

People with firsthand knowledge of Monterey County theatre history are passing, leaving a big gap in the historical record of our theatre community. This three- year project, in partnership with California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), will collect and archive Monterey County Theatre Oral History following the Oral History Association and CSUMB protocols and standards. In addition, video interviews will be used for community events.

MCTA is an ideal organization for coordinating this theatre-related project. We currently support 20 local Producers and have a membership with a wealth of local knowledge. The program will include all of Monterey County, including Salinas, and South Monterey County. At various stages of the project, we will sponsor and coordinate public theatre history presentations and lectures.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

In 2021 we will try to:

• Increase attendance at and awareness of the local theatres after local theatres have reopened. In the mean time, we will continue to support the "pop-up" shows and support/manage virtual performances via Zoom.
• Expand access and promotion to current and future theatre performances
• Provide individuals with technical skills to support "back stage" activities to support individuals theatres and training re Oral History collection and archive
• Expand support for promoting Theatre Arts scholarship availability to our high school and community college students

Strategies include:

• Expanding information distribution via social media, web sites, publicity, presentations, and connections with other local nonprofits
• Building a volunteer program to enhance internal resource, that is, we need more people willing and able to do sorely needed tasks, e.g. distribute promotional materials, maintain the website (shows constantly open and close), assist with tabling events and presentations to community organizations, e.g. at local libraries, senior centers, high schools
• Provide formal and informal Oral History training

For many years the core of the organization was limited to the individual Board members and one or two volunteers. The Board has evolved over the last five years, with the addition of several people with needed skill sets and experience with systems, e.g. development and maintenance of social media, e.g. FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram; website development and maintenance; an email distribution system (MailChimp) and survey capabilities, e.g. (SurveyMonkey). In addition business operations are being streamlined by implementing QuickBooks and Little Green Light, a donor management system. We are actively using Zoom Webinar for online performances.

One of our new Board members has 27 years experience as a project manager, planner, grant writer, and financial management. Two of our new Board members and two volunteers bring experience with social media management, database systems, and financial systems.

The MCTA volunteer program is underway. We are reaching out to other local nonprofits in our area, who focus on connecting volunteers with nonprofits, as well as leveraging personal contacts with our members to recruit additional volunteers.

Current accomplishments include:
• We presented multiple lectures to various senior centers and into the high school classrooms, as well as conducting community Technical Theatre panel discussions..
• We established a partnership with California State University, Monterey Bay to support our Oral History program, and have conducted 30 Oral History interviews to date.
• MCTA Membership and, thereby exposure to our organization has significantly increased, as community tabling events and our virtual venue programs.
• Website statistics show a steady monthly increase of new and returning individuals. Social media access metrics is starting to increase.
• We connected 3 individuals with our local theatres and continue to award up to two scholarships per year.
• We've presented multiple Technical Theatre lectures to individual high school classes and panel discussions and will continue to do so.
Our social media presence has increased with the addition of twitter and instagram

This year we will be presenting at least one lecture to our senior center re who MCTA is as an organization, and continue to bring Technical Theatre lectures into the high school classroom, as well as conducting community Technical Theatre panel discussions..

Our Oral History Program with continue, expanding social participation with events, podcasts, to our community at large.
