STOP CANCER Grants
STOP CANCER grants are given to the most promising scientists at UCLA’s Jonsson, USC Norris and City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Centers. STOP CANCER grants are called Research Career Development Awards (RCDA). Awardees are selected each year based on nominations of each cancer center’s internal peer review recommendations.
Each STOP CANCER grant is for $150,000 which provides three years of research support for awardees. In addition to the RCDA, the prospective Comprehensive Cancer Centers match the amount with in-kind funds and support in the form of space, equipment, secretarial and administrative support, telephones, laboratory supplies, underlying salary support and other services and interactions between faculty and awardees. With this match support most grants are valued at over $300,000.
The number of grants awarded each year is determined by volume of donations. STOP CANCER also provides one year Seed Grants ranging from $25,000 - $50,000 under the same review conditions and in-kind matching. The peer review program of STOP CANCER follows the model used by the National Institutes of Health and many of the major research funding agencies, organizations and institutions. The purpose of peer review is to evaluate and rate the scientific and technical merit of the proposed research and training. The requests for funding by STOP CANCER go through multiple steps before final grants are made.
