Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
ANW Edu
ANW Edu is a year-round education program that includes subsidized performance tickets and busing; in-class workshops; post-show discussions; standards-based study guides; Tickets for Teachers; Educator Professional Development Workshops; and ANW Edu Learning Resource Center.A Noise Within offers 16 to 18 weekday student matinee productions for school groups. Teachers may also bring students to a regular performance, meaning over 30% of audiences are comprised of students. Students receive fully- or partially-subsidized tickets and many schools also receive free transportation to and from performances. Regardless of economic standing, the majority of student participants have never before attended a live theatre production. A Noise Within’s year-round education program has five components:1) ANW Edu offers a contemporary context for classical literature through student attendance at performances; teaching artist pre-performance workshops in the classroom; fully subsidized tickets with transportation to and from the theatre; post-performance discussions with resident artists; and standards-based study guides.2) Study Guides: A Noise Within’s State of California standards-compliant study guides aid teachers in the preparation of accessible and engaging lesson plans that bring the classics to life. Study guides highlight themes, context, and character analysis, while integrating music, visual arts, and history components.3) Tickets for Teachers offers preview performances at no charge so that teachers may better prepare their students for the experience of live theatre.4) Educator Professional Development Workshops equip teachers with the knowledge, skills, and tools to engage their students in the study of Shakespeare’s plays. Previously, A Noise Within has offered single play intensives on Antony and Cleopatra, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Cymbeline.5) The Classics Live! Learning Resource Center is a one-of-a-kind library that will make audio/visual resources, study guides, research facilities, and reference materials available for educators and students both onsite and online. The Classics Live! Learning Resource Center expansion project is a key component of A Noise Within’s education programs because it offers current education partners more cutting-edge resources to engage the youth of today while bringing in new partners, and extending relationships and partnerships over many years beyond initial contact. Through employing the latest digital and Internet-based technology extending the reach of A Noise Within and its education programs beyond Southern California to the entire state and across the nation.

Shakespeare for HomeSchoolers
For the budding performer (ages 10-18), A Noise Within offers courses especially for homeschoolers that focus on intensive acting techniques and scene study from a Shakespeare play. Course covers basic textual analysis including scansion. Students will use voice and improvisation techniques to bring their characters to life! This course will culminate in an exciting performance for family and friends.
Young Actor's Workshop
This enthralling course is designed to give budding actors the tools to generate authentic connections to dramatic texts, and to create believable and emotionally rich characters. Young Actor’s Workshop (YAW) covers the basic foundations of acting, including given circumstances, objectives, sense memory and recall, and how to effectively use improvisation and pantomime.
Participants in YAW are assigned scene work and improvisational exercises, and the course culminates in a presentation of memorized monologues or scenes. YAW incorporates multiple age levels in order to provide the necessary structure in order to provide students the opportunity to learn from each other’s work. This course is a foundation for the study of acting, and it is expected that the course will be repeated several times in order to deepen the understanding of acting technique and to delve more deeply into scene work.
Teen Monologue Intensive
Master your monologue and rock your audition in this fun and supportive class! A Noise Within’s teen monologue class is the perfect springboard to top conservatory and university drama programs. Each participant will rehearse two contrasting monologues–one contemporary and one classical. First Stage
A Noise Within is pleased to announce an all-new program for the youngest actors – First Stage!
Specially designed for 6-9 year olds, this 8 week program teaches confidence, camaraderie, and acting craft. Ours is the only youth program in Southern California taught by resident artists of a nationally known repertory theatre. Noise Now
Noise Now is an opportunity to expand our family by engaging with our neighboring communities and peer organizations. Noise Now is more than an audience development initiative – it is a commitment to being a great neighbor, to building relationships with audiences and artists, and to demonstrating our eagerness to listen well and respond courageously.
Noise Now is an enhanced commitment to being of service to all audiences. We aim to illuminate and activate underrepresented populations, communities of color, young people, and all others not equitably represented at the theatre. In addition, we are activating non-traditional or underutilized spaces throughout the A Noise Within campus. We are excited to challenge ourselves, identify how disruptive we can push to be, and commit to making decisions “with” – as opposed to “for” – our audiences.
By expanding our artistry to include dance, music, art installations, non-traditional theatre and beyond, we are opening our home to audiences new to theatre and new to us, in addition to facilitating work that illuminates overlap between our mission and the missions of our collaborators.
By hosting increasingly inclusive events and pursuing partnerships with peer organizations, we aim to expand our reach and diversify our offerings. This is an opportunity to listen to our neighbors, identify who’s not in the room, and hold ourselves accountable to being flexible and working differently where appropriate.
Join us as we re-introduce ourselves, as we go outside our comfort zone, and as we ask how we can be of service to our neighborhood.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our most successful art asks our community to question beliefs, focus on relationships, and develop self-awareness. Southern California audiences of all ages and backgrounds build community together while engaging with this most visceral and primal of storytelling techniques. A Noise Within's production of classic theatre includes all plays we believe will be part of expanding our cultural legacy. We interpret these stories through the work of a professional resident company – a group of artists whose work is critical to their community – based on the belief that trust among artists and between artists and audience can only be built through an honest and continuing dialog. Our plays will be performed in rotating repertory, sometimes simultaneously in multiple spaces, and buttressed by meaningful supporting programs to create a symphonic theatrical experience for artists and audience.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Strategic Initiatives
2019-2023
Building on the success of our 2015-20 strategic plan, A Noise Within has identified four goals that will enhance its ability to fulfill the vision of its artists and that will promote its crucial mission and vision in our community. ANW will pursue these goals with strategic thought and collective passion over the next five years in support of our critical purpose.
Three Strategic Goals:
Universal Storyteller
To be the classic theatre that produces excellent work by telling universal stories that reflect the cultural landscape of Los Angeles and to facilitate a meaningful experience between the art and audience.
Lively Campus
To become a multi-faceted theatrical campus which nurtures interdisciplinary performing arts and dynamic educational programs as a cultural community hub.
Organizational Vitality
To create a cohesive internal community that values its employees and artists by providing the tools and resources that will enable them to keep working towards the mission.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
A Noise Within is capable of reaching these outlined goals by striving to cultivate relationships, expand the organization's goals and milestones, and continuing to find more ways to outreach the non-profit theatre through educational and culture programming.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Progression continues to expand and develop. The strategic plan and goals should be met by the end of FY 2023.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
