What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Camp Bravo is an award-winning arts education program located at 6,500 feet in Southern California's San Bernardino Mountains, serving students ages 10-18.
?One of the things that makes Camp Bravo unique,? says Krista Elhai, a theater teacher for 23 years as well as the California State Director of the International Thespian Society, ?is that it truly gets educational theater. Camp Bravo backs up and validates what we teachers are doing in the classroom. Camp Bravo reinforces the standards-based curriculum being taught in California classrooms. This is very rare.?
Camp Bravo offers courses in acting, musical theater, improvisation, Shakespeare, movement, storytelling, and more. Workshops take place outdoors under the towering pines. Campers study stage combat with Robert Goodwin (who choreographed the fights in Batman Begins) and virtual theater from Gai Jones (who literally wrote the book on the subject - Raising the Curtain). Led by our award-winning team of master teachers and arts professionals, students learn to stretch their creative muscles, articulate ideas, work as a team, and develop leadership skills in a supportive environment. ?The teachers of Camp Bravo are amazing,? says Krista Elhai, ?I am not sure that you could go to any college in the country and get such a cross-section of teachers in any theater department?maybe in four years, but not in a week.?
We pride ourselves on the high degree of adult supervision, day and night. For every 100 students per weeklong program there are 27 adults (instructors, counselors, nurse, etc.), roughly one adult for every four campers. This exceeds the American Camp Association standard of one adult per eight campers by one hundred percent.
Every summer Camp Bravo changes 400 kids? lives for the better. Time and again we have seen our alumni blossom and grow to become teachers themselves, while others apply their leadership skills to pursue careers ranging from the arts professions to the United States Marine Corps.
