What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Joint hypermobility (JH) is extremely common amongst dancers and while aesthetically advantageous, JH can also be problematic. The spectrum of GJH ranges from the completely asymptomatic individual to one with a multisystemic CTD. Even in asymptomatic individuals with GJH, poor proprioception, muscle weakness and fatigue are more prevalent than in controls, predisposing them to joint instability and numerous types of injuries such as tendinopathy, joint subluxation and joint dislocation (??). Those with hypermobility disorders can have multisystemic comorbidities as well with anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disorders being quite common. Signs and symptoms pertaining to the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems also occur with a higher incidence. Within the medical community, JH is frequently missed as a factor contributing to pain and other symptoms. Delayed diagnosis is extremely common and may contribute to more severe injury, repetitive trauma, and psychological distress.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Mind-Body Strategies for Hypermobility with Chronic Pain

This mindfulness and movement-focused program is part of an ongoing initiative to learn, discuss, research and incorporate mind-body strategies in an integrative healthcare program for individuals living with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) with chronic pain, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS).

Our Mind-Body Strategies for Hypermobility with Chronic Pain program focuses on three elements principle components - gentle yoga (movement/yoga portion of this program is listed separately as 'Yoga for Chronic Pain,') meditation, and monthly group meetings. Participants will be expected to utilize the principles learned and discussed in monthly group meetings, and apply them to their daily lives at home while keeping a journal of their progress. Our monthly group meetings will discuss experiences over the previous month, challenges, triumphs, and will include support group discussion and meditation. A research project and online program are also being developed. Details will be announced soon.

This program will focus on various types of yoga practice and meditation -- all levels of mobility are welcome!

What are Hypermobility Related Disorders, such as EDS & HSD?’ is the 1st class/video webinar in EDS Wellness’ Hypermobility/EDS “Bootcamp” Series and serves as the first step in our implementation of this new health & patient education program. If you are newly diagnosed with EDS, HSD or another type of Hypermobility Related Disorder, or highly suspect that you may have one of these conditions — this Hypermobility/EDS Education Boot Camp is for you!
This class/workshop will provide an understanding of what hypermobility related disorders are, what they are not, and what they may be. Conditions discussed include EDS, HSD, and related conditions. We will discuss biology, microbiology, biomechanics, and the various systems in the body and how they work together – inside and out. We will discuss the broader “hypermobility” umbrella, including related conditions, and learn the updated & correct terminology. You will come out with a deeper understanding of hypermobility as a whole, and a better understanding of the specifics of EDS, HSD, and other hypermobility disorders. We will also briefly discuss “comorbid” conditions, leaving you feeling empowered to take baby steps towards improving your overall health and well-being.
We are holding 1 educational boot camp class/workshop per month for the next 4 months, while also gathering feedback since we’ve not offered this program before. Feedback is always welcome before, during and after! A program evaluation survey will be provided to all participants. Send an email to [email protected], or use the contact form on our website.
