Programs and results
What we aim to solve
At Maya Traditions, we understand that when we invest in one woman, we are investing in a generation. The artisans we partner with are mothers and wives, and they manage their households as well as their family’s crops. In short, they are amazingly capable and strong, and welcome our support in realizing increased economic empowerment. Many of the artisans we partner with did not have the opportunity to receive a formal education. By providing our artisans and cooperatives with the necessary training to increase capacity and build self-sufficiency, we foster proactive artisans able to conduct business in a larger marketplace.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Artisan Development
Our Artisan Development Program was launched in 2009 to further support our artisans in their personal and professional growth. Women-owned businesses in Guatemala face many challenges that often inhibit long-term success.
A lack of institutional support to invest in either basic education or more advanced business skills for women— in particular indigenous women—has significantly contributed to the high levels of poverty amongst these women in the rural areas of Guatemala.
By providing our artisans and cooperatives with the necessary training to increase capacity and build self-sufficiency, we foster pro-active artisans, able to conduct business in a larger marketplace. We offer multiple resources in support of indigenous artisans' efforts to improve their lives, and the lives of their families:
Community Health Program
Our Community Health Program was initially launched in 1997 to support our artisans with mobile clinics focusing on preventative healthcare. Over the years, the Program shifted focus to center on the preservation and promotion of traditional Maya medicine and knowledge, and the use of medicinal plants to treat common illnesses.
Inclusion of traditional Maya medicine in Guatemala's public healthcare system would both increase access for non-indigenous Guatemalans and also allow for the integration of Maya and Western medicine to adequately meet the health needs of Guatemala’s population as a whole.
While traditional Maya medicine has the strong potential to improve the country’s health standards—this potential isn’t being realized.
Youth Education Program
Maya Traditions empowers indigenous communities by supporting the people we serve with the tools they need to elevate themselves out of poverty and preserve their cultural heritage. We believe that education is the key to freedom from a life of hopelessness.
For 22 years, we have been committed to partnership rather than imposition or handouts. We work in tandem with indigenous communities while respecting and valuing their cultural perspective, local expertise, and collaboration
Our mission is to create agents of change in indigenous communities through quality education, affording students the opportunity to develop the skills they need to positively impact the world around them. Our reach extends beyond academics, building both personal character and pride in the students’ traditional cultures.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Maya Traditions strengthens indigenous communities by supporting the people we serve with the tools they need to elevate themselves out of poverty and preserve their cultural heritage. We believe that fair trade employment is the key to freedom from a life of hopelessness. Our mission is to empower women artisans to be agents of change in indigenous communities through quality employment, affording women especially the opportunity to develop the skills they need to positively impact the world around them. Our reach extends beyond the entrepreneurial world, building both personal character and pride in the artisan’s traditional cultures.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Maya Traditions is a non profit social enterprise, and all our net profit from sales is invested in our social programs that benefit all our partner artisans, such as education scholarships, health, preservation of the Maya culture, professional training, etc. As part of our commitment to developing women artisans to becoming agents of change in indigenous communities, we believe investing in social programs instead of handouts and impositions is key to building confidence in our partner artisans. Through our programs, we believe our partner artisans may receive much needed social benefits while avoiding a state of dependency on long term donations and funding.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Maya Traditions works closely with our partner artisans and has built up a strong sense of trust in the 22 years since our establishment. We take great care in ensuring that our programs are structured to fit the specific needs of the communities we serve. As part of our Artisan Development and Youth Education programs, we provide professional development workshops and seminars to build confidence in prospective entrepreneurs and students alike.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The social programs developed by Maya Traditions since its inception have been the vanguard of providing our partner artisans with the skills and education necessary to become agents of change in their community. Our Youth Education Program has worked to reduce the financial stress of school related expenses faced by the families of our artisan partners. Our Artisan Development Program continues to be an engine of positive growth for our partner artisans by providing fair wages for good produced and supplemented by the aforementioned workshops and seminars focusing on building strong business practices.
We are continuing to expand our programs, particularly our Community Health Program, in order to provide health and wellness education to the communities we partner with. We are also working to provide more education opportunities to the children of our partner artisans, some of which may become the first in their family to attend or complete school.
