Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Front Porch Cohousing, in collaboration with our esteemed partners, is poised to create
the first-of-its-kind inclusive community in Pennsylvania. This pioneering approach
will set a new standard for the development of inclusive and sustainable housing
solutions throughout the state. By combining expertise in neuro-inclusive cohousing,
mission-driven design, and disability advocacy, we aim to create a transformative living
environment that sets a precedent for other locations in Bucks County, Doylestown
Township, and beyond.
Our mission is to address the urgent need for affordable and attainable inclusive housing options for individuals with diverse neurological and cognitive abilities. The proposed community will prioritize the following principles of neuro-inclusive cohousing:
■ Inclusivity: Every resident should have a valued place in their community, where they can be themselves freely and authentically.
■ Support: Comprehensive wrap-around services catering to the healthcare, education, employment, and social needs of the residents will be a priority.
■ Autonomy: Residents and/or their families will have the freedom to
make decisions that impact their lives and their community.
■ Community Integration: Our vision includes establishing strong bonds with the wider Doylestown community, fostering a sense of belonging among residents.
In recent years, the urgency of providing suitable care and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania has reached a critical point. Rising housing costs coupled with an alarming 11 percent decline in service provision over the last three years have exacerbated this crisis. Our initiative seeks to alleviate this issue by providing a sustainable solution that addresses affordability, care, and most importantly, inclusion
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Pioneering the ‘First of its kind’ Neuro-Inclusive Co-housing in Bucks County
Developing a neuro-inclusive housing community in Bucks County represents a pioneering effort to create a first-of-its-kind living environment for individuals with diverse neurological backgrounds.
1. Collaborative Planning and Development: Creating an unprecedented neuro-inclusive housing community requires collaboration between various stakeholders. Key steps in this process include:
◇ Establish a steering committee: Form a group of stakeholders, including representatives from local government, disability advocacy groups, housing developers, and the community, to guide the project's development and implementation.
◇ Conduct needs assessments: Assess the target population's housing and support needs, engaging neurodiverse individuals and their families.
◇ Develop a master plan: Create a comprehensive plan outlining the project's vision, goals, design principles, financing strategies, and timelines.
2. Innovative Design and Construction: A central aspect of pioneering neuro-inclusive housing is incorporating innovative design and construction approaches that cater to the unique needs of neurodiverse individuals, including:
◇ Universal design: Embracing universal design principles to ensure housing units and communal spaces are accessible, functional, and aesthetically appealing for all residents.
◇ Flexible living spaces: Design flexible housing units, allowing customization based on individual needs and preferences.
◇ Sustainable and eco-friendly materials: Incorporate environmentally friendly materials and technologies in the construction process, promoting sustainability and reducing the project's environmental impact.
3. Comprehensive Support Services: To ensure the success of the neuro-inclusive housing community, a wide variety of support services tailored to the needs of neurodiverse residents must be considered, including:
◇ Healthcare: Partnering with local healthcare providers to offer on-site or easily accessible medical and therapeutic services.
◇ Education and employment: Collaborate with schools, vocational training centers, and employers to create opportunities for residents to develop skills and engage in meaningful work.
◇ Social and recreational activities: Facilitate social integration and promote community organizing regular events and activities catering to residents' diverse interests and abilities.
4. Community Engagement and Integration: We aim to build strong relationships between the community and housing community by:
◇ Encouraging community involvement: Inviting residents to participate in events and activities within the neuro-inclusive housing community promotes understanding and social integration.
◇ Establishing partnerships: Collaborating with local businesses, non-profit organizations, and community groups to create opportunities for residents to engage with their surroundings and contribute to the community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Bucks County faces unique challenges and opportunities in providing housing for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a significant percentage of the population (12.5%) having disabilities, it is crucial to address the physical, sensory, and cognitive needs of these individuals as well as the aging population and other often overlooked segments of the population. The Almshouse parcel offers an unparalleled opportunity to develop accessible and inclusive housing, communal areas, and wrap-around support services that enhance residents' quality of life.
