What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational (MPAPI)

MPAPI is an annual plein air painting event. 2016 will be our 11th year. Sales to-date are over $1M in 10 years. The event is an invitational which means that artists are invited to participate. Event supports a group of 25 professional artists from Hawaii and the Mainland each year. The artists paint at 3+ public events in Lahaina which was the original capitol of Hawaii and an old whaling town. Artists can paint throughout the island during their 'free' time. 150 paintings are created during the week. Event culminates with a Collectors' Gala & Sale on Friday followed by a Mingle during an Artists' Reception.

Population(s) Served

Annual workshop for 40 aspiring young artists to learn about paintng landscapes outside. Judged youth event and 3 students receive awards and the opportunity to exhibit their painting at the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational with awards given to the week-long plein air competition.

Population(s) Served

Plein Air workshops are offered before and after the Workshops are considered an adjunct art experience to the overall Invitational. Sharing the skills of the professional artists that also are talented teachers with our local aspiring arts is a 'give back' to our community

Classes are usually 3 or 4 days. Class enrollment is 12-16 students. Instructors are selected from 'visiting' professional artists that have been selected to participate in the Invitational.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We are striving to build a fine arts museum in West Maui. This will be a small but high quality facility that will showcase the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational's works of art, host traveling art exhibits, offer adult art workshops, have a thriving museum membership program, and become an art destination for visitors to Maui while nourishing our local citizens to gain and respect fine art in their lives.

Prepare a location strategy within West Maui
Develop financial budget
Determine community support and involvement through surveys and community focus groups
Develop and manage a Capital Campaign
Implement the plans for a vibrant and active West Maui Fine Arts Museum

Our organization has a history of working with sponsors to produce the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. The annual budget of $150K which is typically comprised of $60K cash and $90K In-Kind donations. It is a struggle to generate enough cash to manage the annual event. But we've done this and quite well, I might add. With the advent of the goal of building a visual fine arts museum, we will be required to hire professional help in order to achieve our capital campaign goals. Our community has many retired professional households that have expressed an interest in helping. Only time will tell.

Reconfirmed the three key board members and three advisory directors.
Processed all the gov't paperwork to change the name of the organization from West Maui Cultural Council to Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational with the State of HI and the IRS.
Added an experienced Public Relations Person to our working committee
Developed Vision, Mission, Values, and future organization documents
Developed Maui ARTS League presentation for future donors
Initiated discussions with Maui architect for museum/cafe/gift shop rendering
Explored known facilities for potential location (not many on Maui especially when you consider the a/c requirements, lighting, etc.)
Exploring land purchase options on West Maui
Planned Public Announcement of the organization's name in August 2015
Conduct community focus groups Sept-Dec. 2015
