Two full length ballets with full orchestra & professional guest artists are shown in a theatre setting as a culmination of year round comprehensive graded dance and injury prevention program. Classes & workshops for all ages and abilities in multiple dance disciplines taught by staff and visiting guests.

Dance Classes and Workshops
West Hawaii Dance Theatre offers a wide range of dance education opportunities.
The year round comprehensive dance program includes graded classical ballet, contemporary, tap, jazz, modern character and injury prevention. Visiting guests conduct winter and summer workshop intensives.
Performances
Two full length ballets with live music are performed bi-annually at local theatre. Outreach performances are traveled to assisted living homes, hospitals, schools, shopping centers, and hotels. In-studio performances are held regularly.
Teacher Training and Mentor Program
Select students with potential for becoming future teachers assist WHDT instructors during classes to secure the future of the visual arts. Certificates in the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM can be earned by completing a 4 part program.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
West Hawaii Dance Theatre plans to offer year round educational dance classes, workshops, and rehearsals in preparation for productions that will be presented in both theatrical and outreach settings.
Beginning in July 2019 and continuing through the end of June, 2020, students will attend daily classes that will culmina in performances that will be scheduled throughout the year. Classes and rehearsals are accompanied by live piano.
July 2019 though December 2019 will be dedicated to Full Length Nutcracker . January 2020 though June 2020 will be dedicated to Timour Bourtasenkov’s new ballet “Jungle Book” and one short classic ballet such as “Les Sylphide” or “Don Quixote”. The theatre performances will include Orchestra and Professional Guest Artists.
Selections will be shown as outreach performances at Regency Hualalai Assisted Living Home, Kona Adult Day Care Center, Kona Life Care Center. Nutcracker will be shown in December, Jungle Book and Les Sylphides will be presented in May & June. Performance at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea will be December 21,22,23, 2019 and May 23, 2020.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
WHDT’s Artistic Director, Assistant Director and Instructors will teach all classes and conduct rehearsals to prepare students for the performances. The Artistic & Assistant Directors will set the schedule and rehearsals.
Musical Director will interact and schedule musicians for the performances and coordinate with the Artistic and Assistant Director for musical needs.
Office Manager will schedule the front desk administration, interface with Artistic and Assistant director for schedules and rehearsals, contact outreach venues to schedule performances, interview and schedule volunteers, order costumes for performances and stock for boutique.
Front Desk Administrators will Interact with parents and students, check in students to classes, update Studio director, on line scheduling, return phone calls and answer questions.
Marketing and Promotions director will provide Web Page updates, newspaper and social media postings , including Facebook, Instagram Twitter. They will produce flyers, posters, playbills, and integrate with radio stations.
Accounting director will review contracts, prepare and manage budgets, pay bills, reconcile monthly statements, and tax information.
All of the above will happen in a seamless, stress free environment, and will result in a positive flow of energy towards the goal.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
West Hawaii Dance Theatre transforms individuals and builds community by providing a comprehensive educational dance and injury prevention program on the Big Island of Hawaii since 1993.
For over 26 years, WHDT has been serving the Big Island community with their exceptionally diverse and family friendly program, including daily classes in multiple dance and theatre disciplines, injury prevention, workshops, outreach programs, performance opportunities, and guest artist residencies.
Hundreds of WHDT students have gone on to professional dance careers or have receive degrees of higher education from colleges and universities.
Students are accepted irrespective of financial circumstance.
Performances are an integral part of WHDT’s training program and are a result of the educational dance program.
Theatrical productions at the Kahilu Theatre, are offered twice a year and include live music and guest professional dancers. Productions have included full length ballets such as “Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “The Little Mermaid”,"Wizard Of Oz", "Pinocchio" “Don Quixote”,”Cinderella, “Coppelia”, “Swan Lake”,"Gaiete Parisienne" & “The Enchanted Liliquoi Forest” to name a few.
Outreach school programs, performances in senior centers & shopping centers, and in support of other non-profit organizations, summer and winter intensives, and teacher training and certification in the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Exercise Methods are just a few more of WHDT offerings.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
WHDT offers the only comprehensive technique-based graded dance and injury prevention program on Hawaii Island similar to the best international conservatories and academies. Students pass written and verbal examinations in order to advance to the next level. Students attending college or institutions of higher learning who have gone through WHDT’s program are placed in the highest level even in their freshman year.
West Hawaii Dance Theatre’s family -friendly studio and theatre environment allows students support to become active community citizens. They are taught the critical life lessons about self respect and working with others. They learn the importance of responsibility, taking care of their dance attire, costumes, and each other. They learn about cooperation of working together towards a common goal.
Performances empower students through active participation, thus strengthening their confidence and self-esteem.
Through the discipline of dance and movement training, students will increase their physical strength and coordination, ability to learn, memorize and remember movement sequences, and understand movement in relationship to music.
Invited visiting guest professionals who participate in WHDT’s productions inspire our students, showing them the possibly to pursue visual arts or teaching as a career choice.
Audiences who attend WHDT’s performances are viewing quality historical ballets with live orchestra. WHDT is the only outer-island organization offering this opportunity for students and audience members
