Mission

In Hawaii, the health and resilience of our environment is inextricably linked to our wellbeing as a community and uniqueness as a place. We invest in efforts to educate and engage our communities in activities that promote the stewardship of our natural resources, and we support programs that are critical to the development of our most vulnerable youth, from their earliest years into young adulthood. We hope to ensure the preservation of Hawaii, while giving our younger generations the resources and support they need to chart our future.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Opportunity Youth

This program focuses on increasing success for Opportunity Youth (OY), a growing segment of young people between ages 16-24 who are neither in school, in job training, nor employed in the workforce. While this stage can be full of hope and opportunity for some, for others it can be the beginning of a lifelong struggle as support systems disappear and are not replaced by clear pathways and relevant guidance. One in 9 youth in Hawaii are OY, an estimated 17,000. The Kosasa Foundation supports programs that deliver measurable results to youth in reconnecting to school, work, family, and community.

PURPOSE
-support programs that are effective at reconnecting OY to education, workforce, career, and community that provide pathways to success
-create shared learning amongst OY grantees
-use data on measures that matter most to OY to increase our understanding of their challenges.

At-risk youth

With the impacts of climate change being felt in real ways, the Kosasa Foundation wishes to support and advance practices that increase the resilience of our islands. We believe that engaged communities that understand and embrace stewardship of our home will help us face the challenges that we are experiencing.

Our Community-Based Environmental Stewardship (CBES) Program seeks to support nonprofits across the state to:
-improve a range of environmental conditions;
-encourage community participation, education, and awareness to create a sustainable future; and
-connect residents with nature in ways that nurture a relationship of reciprocity in which 'aina and people both receive and give care.

We look for projects that demonstrate:
-Clear goals towards improving the environment
-Strong engagement by community members
-Ability to present measureable results
-Collaboration between community, the scientific community, and relevant government agencies
