Community Spokes

The Community Spokes Program is the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s effort to create a statewide network of bicycle and pedestrian advocates at the local level. We empower residents to become champions—or “Community Spokes”—of better biking and walking in their cities and towns.

Through training, education, and ongoing technical support, you too can become part of a growing coalition of people working to improve biking and walking conditions in Maine. In just two online half-day sessions, you will learn how to assess existing bike/ped infrastructure, navigate local bureaucracy, and connect with like-minded individuals.

We currently have more than 160 Spokes representing all of Maine’s 16 counties, but are always looking to add more!

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

BCM’s five-year strategic plan will guide our efforts to elevate Maine’s reputation as
a bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly state, educate people of all ages on how to safely bike
and walk, and advance Complete Streets principles that ensure roads are designed and
safe for all users—bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.

Now, more than ever before, the people of Maine are choosing to walk and ride
bikes for recreation, fitness, and transportation. We at the Coalition envision a future
where Maine’s roads, public ways, and trails are safe, accessible, and well-used by
everyone—resulting in cleaner travel options, improved health, and stronger economic
benefits for Maine communities. If you find these goals as inspiring as we do, please
get involved with our efforts and consider making a donation to support our work.
