Classrooms and Schools Grants

We fund educator-driven projects and initiatives bringing curriculum to life and inspiring our students to inquire, adapt, persevere and innovate. By partnering closely with the community and Dare County Schools, DEF funds initiatives that fall outside school budgets up to $2500.

DEF is proud to offer supplemental support for DCS educator endeavors in College Credit course work, Praxis Certification Exams, National Boards Initial or Renewal Applications, as well as Professional Development opportunities.

We provide financial support to high-achieving students with high financial need, so that they can take the next step in their educational journey. With a single application, apply for up to three scholarships.

Our affordable teacher housing complexes, Run Hill Ridge and Hatteras Teacher Housing, are proven recruitment and retention tools, enabling Dare County Schools (DCS) to hire and keep highly qualified teachers in our classrooms.

1. Increase DEF's charitable contributions to teachers, schools, and scholarships from $57,650 to $100,000 by 2023.
2. Grow from limited committee and Board membership to at least 3 Board members on each DEF Committee.

Increase UNRESTRICTED individual donations from $11,000 to $20,000 by June 30, 2022
Strategies:
-Increase peer-to-peer fundraising from raising $2865 in 2020-2021 to raising $5000 in 2021-2022
-Increase the customization of annual appeal from 1 letter to at least four letters
-Increase the audience of the annual appeal from 1700 people to 2500 people
-Increase Board participation in giving strategy, working with them on customization of letters and outreach to new audiences
-Adjust online giving to allow for recurring monthly and annual donations

Recruit at least two new Board members, maintaining 12 voting members on the Board of Directors
Strategies:
-Review donor list and actively reach out to engaged donors to meet in-person, with a goal to meet with at least two people per month.
-Complete tasks list and share with the Governance Committee for feedback and approval.
-Work with Dare County Schools staff and educators to identify retiring or active personnel that have the time and energy to support DEF.
-Work with the Governance Committee to revise Board member orientation

Increased donations received by 99%, from $26,663 to $53,075 over the previous year.
Increased charitable giving by 50% to $66,000
Updated all Board Committee job descriptions
Allowed for virtual participation in all Board and Committee meetings
Added two new Committee volunteers, and two new Board members.
