What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Adoption Program
The Furkids mission is matching homeless animals with forever homes. An incredible team of volunteer adoption counselors works through our two shelters, our Pet Adoption and Community Resource Center, 8 in-store adoption centers, and at community events. Over 600 animals are available for adoption. Furkids places over 3,000 animals a year into loving homes.
Rescue
Furkids saves over 30 animals per week. Most come to us from kill shelters on their last day, as strays people find, or from pet owners no longer able to care for them. All are homeless and in need of immediate care and love. Since 2002, we have rescued more than 35,000 animals.
Shelter
Furkids is Georgia’s largest no-kill animal shelter. Our cat shelter houses approximately 275 cats in a beautiful, cage-free environment, and our newly renovated dog shelter houses 40 dogs. Others are cared for in our foster homes or 8 adoption centers through Petco and PetSmart. Every day, Furkids cares for more than 600 animals. In the near future, we hope to secure a larger shelter to better serve the community.
Foster Homes
Furkids began as a network of foster homes. Fostered animals temporarily reside, often as briefly as a week or two, in the homes of nurturing volunteers throughout the Atlanta area until they are permanently adopted. We provide food and veterinary care for the fostered animals.
FIV+ Cats
Furkids operates the only facility in Georgia dedicated to FIV+ cats. Under full-time volunteer supervision, approximately 40 cats live in their own house and receive veterinary care from our medical team. They receive the same love and care as all of our animals, and the hope of finding forever homes.
Veterinary Care
Furkids provides thorough and lifesaving medical care for all of our animals. Routine examinations and vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries are performed onsite at our cat shelter. Staff and volunteers assist with 24/7 care. All animals are neutered, vaccinated, tested and receive all necessary treatment prior to adoption.
Furkids Interstate TransFUR Coalition
Begun in March of 2018, the Furkids Interstate TransFUR Coalition is a partnership of source shelters across Georgia and destination shelters in 13 northern states. To date, Furkids has rescued and transported over 3,500 animals, where they are adopted within days of arrival.
Furkids Kids
Furkids is the only shelter in Georgia that allows children to socialize with and care for animals. This opportunity better prepares our animals for adoption and fosters a relationship between animals and children. Our regular weekly youth activities at the shelter include hosting autistic children and scout troops.
Student Partnerships
For older volunteer students, Furkids provides caretaking opportunities at our shelters and our Petco and PetSmart adoption centers. More than a dozen local schools and colleges take part in Furkids volunteer activities. We also welcome students from out-of-state universities to serve at Furkids during their winter and spring breaks.
Adult Volunteers
We are proud of the large volunteer force of adults who generously give to carry out our day-to-day operations, special events, and fundraising functions. Currently, Furkids has more than 400 active volunteers. Our volunteers are our lifeline at Furkids, and we thank them!
Thrift Store
The Furkids thrift store is supported solely by gently used or new items donated by individuals in the community. The store generates important revenue that funds some of our programs and boosts public awareness of Furkids. All proceeds from the store go directly to benefit our animals.
Community Outreach
Furkids provides educational resources for pet adoption and spaying/neutering through email, direct mail, social media and our website. Furkids volunteers work diligently to respond to more than 10,000 inquiries annually for help, ranging from adoption procedures to rescuing animals to medical emergencies.
Purrkids
Purrkids volunteers help shy, fearful, traumatized and under-socialized cats to become trusting of people and adoptable. Purrkids volunteers change these animals’ lives in profound and lasting ways. The results can be agonizingly slow, but it’s rewarding to watch a frightened cat learn to trust humans and enjoy interaction.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Furkids mission is to rescue homeless animals, provide them with the best medical care and nurturing environment while working to find them a forever home. Furkids heals the whole animal, physically and emotionally, restoring its health and its spirit. Furkids has rescued and altered more than 20,000 animals since its founding in 2002. Approximately 1,000 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids shelters, 13 PetSmart and Petco adoption centers, and more than 400 foster homes in the Atlanta area. Additionally, Furkids works to create an environment where younger volunteers can participate and become part of the overall ecosystem, understand volunteerism, and become allies in the 'adopt, don't shop' idea, and continue to grow Furkids' awareness in the community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
With its two animal shelter locations, a network of 8 PetSmart and Petco adoption centers and up to 400 foster homes, Furkids is out in the community where the families looking to adopt are. Leveraging ongoing adoption events around the region, social media promotion, and the digital adoption application process on the website, Furkids promotes awareness of the adoptable pet population while encouraging the community to volunteer and participate. Also, their vast volunteer network serves not only in a hands-on capacity at the shelters, but also provides a grass-roots word-of-mouth mobile promotions arm.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The greatest strength Furkids has is its extensive volunteer network and the foster network that support the operations. In conjunction with this, the relationships with recurring donors and corporate partners such as PetSmart and Petco are critical to the successful growth of rescue and adoptions seen over the past several years.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
One major goal on the horizon is to develop a campus facility that combines both the cat and dog shelter operations and expands capacity overall. In addition to allowing more natural, open-air space for the animals, it will allow greater economies of scale and a more efficient use of the budget, and will offer the opportunity to further develop educational and community programming around pet adoption and rescue, and therapeutic programs designed around animal-human interaction.
