Mission

The Copper Street Brass Quintet of Minneapolis, MN is a full-time 501(c)3 non-profit chamber music ensemble devoted to teaching youth about the power and significance of music by bringing classical, jazz, and pop music to those who would otherwise not have opportunities to interact with and learn from professional musicians. We do this through creating original arrangements of music that appeal to youth, musically rigorous interactive residencies in schools, and public concerts for all ages.

Soundtracks

Soundtracks is a person-centered creative aging program designed to enrich the lives of older adults living
with Dementia, caregivers, and families. The program includes an introductory concert brought directly to
residents (eliminating the need to bus residents to an arts event), small group music activities for residents inMemory Care Units, and a Capstone Concert where the CSB and residents share their music with the entire
community - all happening inside of an assisted living location.

The Soundtracks program explores how music runs through our entire lives - like the soundtrack in a movie.
During each Soundtracks small-group session, Memory Care Unit (MCU) residents will use their creativity to guide the CSB in choosing musical selections and stories that they think best represents the soundtrack and story for a familiar theme, such as “Love Story”, “Celebration”, or “Travel”. After all five Soundtracks sessions, CSB artists will synthesize these ideas to create a unique movie-themed concert at each location, presenting it as the finalCapstone Concert of the program. The Capstone Concerts feature music, projected images from movies, and stories that celebrate the creativity of the residents in each MCU, giving voice to the richness of life and sharing it with the entire community.

  • Who are the people you serve with your mission?

    CSB’s typical pre-COVID audiences were particularly diverse in age (babies through 100+), geographic distribution and household income. Around 80% of our audience is part of an underserved population. Our commitment to touring the state means that about 75% of our audience resides in Greater Minnesota. Our educational work’s heart has always been in underserved schools, and our recent metro area school partners’ student populations are over 90% students of color. Our work with older adults is strategically focused in communities outside of the metro, serving people who rarely have access to professional arts.

    Our strong partnerships with older adult living facilities means we are able to collect specific feedback to meet the different needs of resident groups in each partner location, which in turn shapes our programs both logistically and programmatically to mitigate barriers to participation. For example knowing details like “Jan in Memory Care loves The Beatles” means we’ll play “She Loves You" at our session so we are sure to get her singing along and break down any barriers there might be between her, the musicians, and the music.
