ART WITH A HEART INC
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
All kids deserve art. But not every child is given the opportunity to experience art. Art With a Heart’s mission is to provide equitable opportunities for high quality visual arts education to Indianapolis children and youth. Our programs seek to offer accessible visual arts education to any interested child in Indianapolis.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Creative Classroom Connections
In-school program focused on integrated arts education. Providing art for students and professional development for classroom teachers. PreK - 1st grade
Summer Camp enrichment
Summer is a time to play, imagine, dream and, unbeknownst to our children, learn. All this and more is happening within Art With A Heart programs. Each summer Art With A Heart works with a variety of community partners to offer opportunities for art engagement. Students that come to Art With a Heart are exposed to a variety of visual art materials and processes, such as drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking and more! Engaging curriculum is developed each summer and tailored to meet the needs of individual partners and student population.
On-site After School
Our after school curriculum is designed to support a growth in cultural understanding through art experiences. As our world becomes increasingly smaller, it is important to educate our students to have an understanding of different ideas, processes and ways of life. Art is an excellent avenue to discover, understand and promote respect for the differences and similarities of communities across the globe. Our curriculum highlights a variety of places around the globe and continues to explore various art processes and subject matter. Core curriculum standards are incorporated into the art lessons to reinforce and encourage academic success.
Saturday Studio
For students who exhibit a natural talent or passion for art, we offer a weekly Studio Program on Saturdays at the AWaH studio. Students will work in a choice-based environment where they are treated like professional artists and in all classes will have the opportunity of to work with a variety of art materials (drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, etc.) and being exposed to the themes of many artists, art movements throughout history and exposure to current artists at the height of their craft. At the end of each session students will host a collective art show to demonstrate all of the work they have accomplished throughout the 10 weeks.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to reach as many children as possible with visual arts education. We hope that we can not only educate, but inspire and nurture success for students in school and in life through success in the arts. Art With a Heart positively impacts the lives of thousands of children, and thereby builds better communities through art, education and love.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Using standards-driven fine art curriculum, Art With a Heart offers programming for children both in school and out of school. We strive to teach skills that benefit children in both school and life. Lesson plans are designed to encourage critical thinking and build problem-solving skills. Curricula include state-mandated educational standards. Low student:teacher ratios (15:1) combined with numerous volunteers help us provide the attention our students need. We teach on-site at various locations from public school classrooms to neighborhood centers to our own studio.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
With only 3 full-time staff members, our organization serves over 3,500 students annually. We offer programs at all 25 Indianapolis Public Library branches through a partnership with their foundation. We also provide after school art programs, in-school arts integration programs, studio sessions, and homeschool studio programs. By providing opportunities at a wide variety of locations, we are able to reach students whose families would not be able to transport them to distant sites for programming. By subsidizing as many programs as possible, we are able to offer all of our programs on a sliding fee scale, for a nominal ($10) fee, or at no charge to the student. In this way, students whose families face financial difficulty can still partake in our programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our organization has grown from one art teacher offering art classes in her basement to an organization that serves in 26 classrooms, 26 library branches, Girl Scout camps, and nearly a dozen after school and summer camp sites.
