Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

The primary programs of G.R.A.C.E. include (1) support and capacity building with a network of 105 grassroots organizations; (2) training and support to community health workers and families helping with orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) (3) educating a cohort of 200
OVC up to and including university, (4) training youth peer educators; and (5) development and training in
sustainable agriculture, dairy goat rearing, marketable
computer skills, home-based care and peer education for
youth through our Research and Resource Centre.
In Kenya, the community reach and effectiveness of home based care workers, youth peer educators, trained traditional healers, birth attendants and others, suggest that our program is built to provide a ripple effect. G.R.A.C.E. provides the impetus for this ripple effect by relying on relationships within and across communities for success. These connections include mentoring relationships with motivation, self-esteem and efficiency are some of the byproducts. Increased knowledge, access to care, counselling and testing, safer childbirth etc. are among the outcomes.

G.R.A.C.E. USA supports the work of G.R.A.C.E. Africa, an international NGO registered in Kenya in 2001 and governed by a board based in Nairobi. The founder and executive director, who volunteers her time, is headquartered in the US, and the organization is staffed and managed in Kenya.

Population(s) Served

This home-based program builds on our current ECD center development and provides services to poor, marginalized children 2 to 6 years old who cannot walk long distances to the existing centers.

Pairs of trained community residents use their skills in child-care, child protection, psychosocial support etc. to care for up to 15 OVC per location.

Population(s) Served

Educate 40 OVC in 2 -year colleges or universities.

Population(s) Served

Since 2010 with support from the Open Society Institute (OSI), G.R.A.C.E. has implemented a program aimed at promoting access to legal and social justice by vulnerable women, children and People Living With HIV and AIDS (PLWHAS).

Population(s) Served

G.R.A.C.E. is among four (4) local organisations that have been collectively funded by European Union to implement a 3 year program to reduce maternal mortality by two thirds and child mortality by three quarters in Samburu County - Kenya.

Specifically, the role of G.R.A.C.E. in the project is to strengthen economic empowerment activities with a view of helping 5,000 households in the county improve their household incomes. Increased household income will improve nutrition, access to maternal and child health services, education, shelter and general quality of life for the community members.

Population(s) Served

G.R.A.C.E. has a ten acre farm in Nanyuki district, Mt. Kenya region. The farm is used as a demonstration and training unit for poor and small scale farmers in the region on innovative agricultural practices. Over the last twelve years, the farm has significantly improved the livelihood of small scale farmers in the region by providing them with skills, information and agricultural inputs to engage in fish farming, bee keeping, drip irrigation, poultry keeping and dairy goat keeping. In crop farming the farmers have been trained to undertake crop rotation, grow pigeon peas, beetroot, cabbages, kales and improved types of maize and beans. Revenues generated from the sale of farm produce have partly sustained its operations with the rest supporting families heavily affected by HIV/AIDS in the location.
