What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

At our shelter, we prioritize finding good homes for the animals in our care and reuniting lost animals with their families. To ensure the well-being of our animals, we spay or neuter them prior to adoption, keep them up to date on vaccinations, and microchip them. We even share our petlists on multiple websites to increase their chances of finding a forever home. In addition, we have found permanent foster homes for many hard-to-adopt animals and provide them with necessary veterinary care and special diets. However, with an increasing number of animals with special medical needs, we are working hard to raise funds to cover our vet bills. To combat the issue of stray cats, we have started educational events to promote TNR. Despite the year-round kitten season, we remain committed to promoting adoptions and ensuring the best possible care for our animals, even if it means spending four times the adoption fee.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Finding good, permanent homes for our animals.
Returning lost animals to their families.
Altering animals so they don't add to the problem of overpopulation of pets.
Educating the public on proper care, the importance of vaccinations, and spay/neuter.

We use social media to help identify lost or found pets and return them to owners. We share with the public tips for finding a lost pet, tips for finding a home for their pet using the Re-Home link to Adopt-A-Pet on our website, and our adoption counselors spend a lot of time with clients discussing how to socialize their new pet and introduce it to other pets in the household. Our Human Education committee makes appearances at the schools and on television to promote our mission.

We are all volunteers who love animals and want to give them the best chance possible at a happy life. We work hard to raise funds to pay for their medical needs and to operate the shelter. Working together as a team of more than 200 individuals who dedicate themselves to the mission, Parma Animal Shelter has had a lot of happy endings. We have a small building and our rooms are tinier than we'd like but we make it work. Each year we strive to do better. We are ever hopeful to make improvements in the building. We are always looking to improve our policies and procedures by learning from new ideas. We are enthusiastic, always, and determined to do our best for our animals.

We have been making improvements to the shelter to enrich the experience for our animals. Recently we created large exercise areas that can be used year round outdoors for the dogs and created climbing walls and cubbies for the cats. We set up bird feeders outside the windows so the cats could watch the birds while they spend time in the exercise room.
