Red Rock Mountain Bike Patrol
Red Rock Bike Patrol is a NON-ENNFORCEMENT volunteer group whose mission is to ASSIST, EDUCATE and INFORM all trail users in the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest.
The Red Rock Bike Patrol consists of 25 volunteer patrollers and is recognized by the National Forest Service as its eyes and ears in the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest.
Each patroller receives four hours of instruction and must pass a test sanctioned by the International Mountain Bicycling Association. Additionally, each patroller is first aid and CPR certified and must recertify biennially.
Patrollers must demonstrate the following abilities:
Intermediate mountain biking skills
Willingness to help other people and be involved in our local trails
Learning and sharpening skills like first aid, trailside bike repair, talking to people about our trails and assisting lost trail users, and helping to promote the public perception of mountain biking
Reporting trail damage to the Red Rock Ranger district
Last year, the Red Rock Mountain Bike Patrol also supported:
3,300 patrol hours
Dozens of Red Rock Ranger District Trail Workdays
Big Park School Bike Rodeo

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Operate a volunteer bike patrol to assist, educate and inform all non-motorized trail users in the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest.
Provide volunteers for trail work days at the Red Rock Ranger District, Dead Horse State Park and the Sedona Bike Skills Park.
Perform semi-annual Adopt-A-Highway cleanups on two miles of SR-89A.
Raise $100,000+ for trail maintenance work and new trail construction in the Red Rock Ranger District between 2018 and 2021.
Work with other community organizers to develop policies that support cycling in the Verde Valley.
Maintain a website with current information about biking news, events, and trails
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Outfit and train an active volunteer bike patrol.
Work closely with the Red Rock Ranger District, Dead Horse State Park and the City of Sedona to ensure sufficient volunteers at scheduled trail work days.
Maintain a seat on the Verde Valley Transportation Planning Organization and actively participate in its activities.
Work with the City of Sedona on the creation of a Master Bicycle and Walking Plan for the city.
Maintain liaisons with other state bicycling advocacy organizations.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are fortunate that 10 of our board members, and large percentage of our membership are active retirees who bring incredible professional skills to our Coalition.
Our day-to-day activities are managed through the following committee approach:
The Marketing and Fundraising Committee is responsible for developing and executing fund raising activities to achieve targets as approved by the Board in the annual budgeting process as well as management/maintenance of the www.vvcc.us website.
Our Road Bike Advocacy Committee has the authority of the Board to conduct VVCC business related to Road Bike Advocacy matters (i.e., scheduling of VVCC road rides; assisting, advising and educating Members and the general public on road bike related matters; road bike infrastructure and access [bike lanes and paved bike trails], equality with vehicles on roads, streets, and highways; and collaboration with a wide variety of public and private agencies) to cultivate and sustain a community-led road bike culture.
Our Mountain Bike Advocacy Committee has the authority of the Board to conduct VVCC business related to Mountain Bike Advocacy matters including, but not limited to: scheduling of VVCC trail rides and work days; assisting, advising and educating Members and the general public on mountain bike advocacy related matters; trail access; equality with hikers, equestrians, and other trail users on off-road trails; and collaboration with a wide variety of public and private agencies and land mangers to cultivate and sustain a community-led mountain bike culture.
Finally, our Events Committee is responsible for for organization and management of the Annual Meeting, Annual Picnic, Holiday Party and other events in accordance with the budget.
Our annual budget is in excess of $200,000 annually.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The all-volunteer VVCC has helped create bike lanes on SR-179 and 89A; conducted quarterly Adopt-A-Highway cleanups on SR-89A and swept a five-mile section of SR-179’s bike lanes in the unincorporated VOC quarterly since August 2010. In June 2017, we convinced ADOT to take over this responsibility. The VVCC was also instrumental in Cottonwood/Sedona (Bronze/Silver) attaining bicycle Friendly Community designation by the League of American Bicyclists.
The VVCC supports the local mountain bike community by leading the effort to build the Sedona Mountain Bike Skills Park in 2016. We conduct approximately 40 trail workdays annually and have raised over $100,000 for Red Rock Ranger District (RRRD) trail maintenance and construction. The VVCC operates the 35-member Red Rock Mountain Bike Patrol helping all trail users.
We conduct 150+ group road/mountain bike rides annually including e-bike participation. Our membership has almost tripled the past year and we contribute over 10,000 volunteer hours to the community annually.
