Mission

Newark Now was founded by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker six years ago to provide Newark residents with skills, tools, and support to transform their neighborhoods. After a robust outreach effort, Newark Now’s work began with seven brave grassroots organizations during the summer of 2003. Today, those seven organizations are some of the most successful grassroots organizations within the City of Newark and have been joined by many more grassroots organizations that partner with Newark Now to improve their neighborhoods.

Over the years, Newark Now’s work has evolved. Today, Newark Now is an intermediary organization that partners with municipal government, residents, grassroots organizations, and the philanthropic community to catalyze the achievement of significant positive outcomes throughout the city. The organization channels the efforts and energy of the grassroots community to improve safety, economic independence, and civic participation.

The Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) directly connects thousands of Newarkers annually to important governmental, financial, and legal services. The FEC operates Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Refund Now sites that in 2008 helped more than 2,100 low-income families obtain more than $3 million in tax refunds through free, professional tax preparation services.

Fathers Now at the Newark Comprehensive Center for Fathers   (NCCF) is annually helping more than 80 fathers develop a stronger commitment to fatherhood, stronger parenting skills, and stronger employment skills. NCCF serves fathers in transition – men who have lost their jobs and homes, or who are re-entering the workforce following incarceration and who seek to assume greater responsibility for and contribute to the lives of their children.
In the 2008/2009 season NCCFgraduated 5classes with a total of 88 men.

Family Success Centers (FSC) that are connecting more than 500 of Newark's most challenged families to vital government and non-governmental services and resources in ongoing ways, in the neighborhoods in which the residents live. The Family Success Centers  provide residents with a one stop shop of essential resources and services including food stamps, health insurance, parenting workshops, career readiness opportunities, and access to the earned income tax credit.

Population(s) Served

A Super Summer Initiative that pools the efforts of local government, community partners, and resident stakeholders to provide fun-filled, family-friendly recreational activities, to target recreational activities and vital information towards high violence neighborhoods, and to increase awareness of summer programs, job training and educational opportunities, social services, youth development programs, sports and outdoor activities and anti-violence initiatives through extensive outreach efforts. In 2008, 135,407 Newarkers participated in 271 Super Summer events, including block parties, outdoor movies, music concerts, cultural festivals, sporting events, farmers markets, and more. Also, in 2008, nearly 30,000 Super Summer Directories with 110 pages of summer opportunities for youth, families and seniors were distributed throughout the five wards in Newark.
