At the Leadership Academy we envision a nation where every school and school system is led by transformational leaders who prepare all children, especially the traditionally underserved, for success. We build the capacity of educational leaders, at every level of the system, to confront inequities and create the necessary conditions for all students to thrive.

School Leader Development
Strong school leadership is essential to improving schools and outcomes for students. We leverage our extensive track record and expertise in preparing aspiring principals to lead schools and supporting sitting principals in strengthening their practice to help school systems build effective leadership pipelines and school leadership practice. Programs include: --ASPIRING PRINCIPALS PROGRAM: We have directly prepared more than 550 aspiring school leaders through our Aspiring Principals Program (APP). We have also worked with more than 15 school districts, universities, and state departments of education to adapt this model and launch local preparation programs. --NEW PRINCIPAL INSTITUTE: The Institute prepares school leaders for the challenges and opportunities of the principalship. Participants work alongside expert coaches and practitioners who have prepared over 900 new principals to effectively lead their schools from day one. --PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: We partner with districts and states to implement a strategic approach to professional development. We assist with strategic planning and program design; curriculum design and delivery; and program assessment. --SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAMS: A 12+ month professional development program designed to help districts build the school-based leadership capacity to transform schools and improve student learning.
District Leader Development
Strong school leaders need strong leaders themselves. We offer consulting services to develop and enhance principal supervisor programs. For districts redefining the principal supervisor role and thinking about expanding their principal supervisor cadre, we can assist you in re-conceptualizing the role and designing a competency-based selection process. We also provide a range of services for principal supervisors, including executive coaching and direct training designed to build key supervisory skills – such as observations and feedback. Our staff can also work side-by-side with principal supervisors and other central office staff to build their instructional capacity, including how to design relevant professional development for school leaders and how to effectively facilitate adult learning. Programs include: --FOUNDATIONS OF PRINCIPAL SUPERVISION: This year-long program assists districts focused on improving and strengthening principal supervision and support. We provide professional development for individuals from around the country who are new to the principal supervision role. The program includes a summer intensive, a virtual learning community, and a midyear convening. --LEADING AND LEARNING: This professional development series provides on-site professional learning modules for principal supervisors to build their capacity to navigate the complexities of the role. With a focus on balancing support with evaluation, the program helps principal supervisors build their skills and provides them with opportunities to practice and refine those skills through authentic simulations and role plays.
Research confirms that job-embedded, differentiated support is the most effective way to help school administrators strengthen their practice and grow as leaders. We provide leadership coaching, coach training, and strategic consulting for coaching programs to help districts, states, charter schools, and other education-focused organizations that work with schools leverage one of the most important factors that influences student achievement—the role of the principal. Services include: --DIRECT SERVICE COACHING: Our coaches work intensively with school leaders to help them set and meet goals, build strong leadership teams, and influence the culture of their school, all in the service of students and student learning. Our standard school-year coaching packages are described below. We customize packages according to the client’s needs. --SCHOOL LEADERSHIP COACH TRAINING: We have trained more than 700 school leadership coaches across the country in our unique Facilitative, Competency-Based (FCB) model. Coach training options are available for novice and experienced coaches. --COACHING PROGRAM CONSULTING: We provide consulting and training that enables school systems to design and strengthen coaching programs and to develop highly-skilled coaches who help school leaders achieve their leadership and school improvement goals. --EXECUTIVE COACHING: We also offer executive coaching for district leaders that is tailored to the individual’s learning and growth needs. Our executive coaching work is grounded in systems-thinking, supporting the coachee in leading with an expansive perspective and in developing the skills and mindset to manage increasing complexity, while also pushing the coachee to focus on connecting their leadership work to the ultimate goal of improving how well they serve students, families, and schools.
Advancing Leadership for Equity
The Leadership Academy is committed to eliminating the inequities that students experience based on race and other factors, through the development of school- and district-based leaders with the will and skill to build culturally responsive, equitable learning environments that serve all students. We embed this into all of our work, and also offer tools and services that specifically focus on helping school systems build the capacity of school and district leaders to advance equity. -- EQUITY SIMS: Our Equity Sims are a flexible professional learning resource to help school and system leaders build capacity to identify and address actual issues related to racial equity. The Sims furnish examples of common, everyday occurrences in schools that affect student equity and access. Within the scenarios users interact with a variety of stakeholders and constituents, make leadership decisions, deal with the consequences of their decision-making, and reflect on the choices they have made including how their own racial identity may affect their responses to various stakeholders and how their beliefs about racial equity may inform their decisions. -- SCHOOL EQUITY DIAGNOSTIC: This tool helps school leaders and their teams identify areas for improvement that will advance racial equity in a school, and assists leaders in developing and advancing racial equity goals. This guides personal leadership and school development because racial equity work requires the intentional development of self and others. -- COACHING FOR EQUITABLE PRACTICE: This training empowers leaders who coach others as part of their work to develop awareness of their own blind spots, assumptions, and biases. It provides participants with the language and tools to discuss issues of race and equity with greater confidence, and enables them to build leaders’ capacity to recognize and address issues related to race and equity in schools and school systems.
