Putting Lives Back into Motion
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In most communities, gyms, leisure centers and swimming pools are “no-go zones" for the disabled. The beach is practically off limits because the sand is a natural barrier to entry. Facilities often lack proper access, lifts and automatic doors, making them difficult to navigate. High membership fees, inaccessible locker rooms and no specialized equipment are some of the common barriers that typically prevent disabled people from participating in everyday fitness and indoor/outdoor recreational activities. Additionally, programs typically do not have staff members with disability awareness or personal trainers with the experience to accommodate the special needs of disabled clients.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
“Adaptive Beach Days”
In 2012, the Sabrina Cohen Foundation approached the City of Miami Beach with a novel idea: Let’s create a “Beach for ALL.” The goal - to provide new fitness and recreational opportunities for our disabled community using a singular access point to the beach previously inaccessible.
This groundbreaking effort came to life in the Summer of 2016 with “Adaptive Beach Days”. This twice-monthly program provides adaptive fitness and recreation programs including shoreline swimming, adaptive surf, yoga, meditation and art therapy, all designed to help improve the lives of those with paralysis and various disabilities.
Accessibility to the ocean is made possible through the creation of access decks over the sand, adaptive equipment and a qualified team of staff and volunteers to help participants in and out of their wheelchairs to a beach wheelchair (water wheels). Since the program’s inception, SCF has served over 2,000 guests, including disabled residents of South Florida and disabled tourists from all over the world.
Our program is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.sabrinacohenfoundation.org
Development of Adaptive Recreation Center
With the success of the Adaptive Beach Days program, word of mouth and social media, the program has attracted local, national and international attention. Today, SCF is expanding from “pop-up” programming to building a permanent Center for year round beach access, providing even greater opportunities for the disabled community. The development of an Adaptive Recreation Center will be a first of a kind oceanfront facility on the east coast catering exclusively to individuals living with disabilities. Visitors will indulge in a uniquely empowering experience, combining indoor and beachside physical fitness with recreational activities that promote mental and spiritual wellness in one central, safe and comfortable location.

Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
With the support from the City of Miami Beach, SCF has created an adaptive beach program that provides access to the beach using a platform of decks and mats over the sand, beach wheelchairs and specialized staff/volunteers. Adaptive Beach Days launched twice monthly in 2016.
To further expand programming, SCF will develop a first of a kind oceanfront facility on the east coast catering exclusively to individuals living with disabilities. Visitors will indulge in a uniquely empowering experience, combining indoor and beachside physical fitness with recreational activities that promote mental and spiritual wellness year round.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
On October 31, 2017, Miami Beach City Officials voted UNANIMOUSLY to allow the Sabrina Cohen Foundation to begin raising funds for the nation's first fully accessible three-story 10,000-square foot “Adaptive Recreation Center." The Center will serve as a one of a kind, year round, access point for people with disabilities to fully enjoy the beach and ocean at 5301 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL.
The creation of a permanent Center will be the pinnacle of a decade of advocacy and work, allowing SCF to implement its overall mission of providing a better quality of life for people with disabilities for years to come. SCF's overall mission will expand to include management and operation of the Center on a full-time, day-to-day basis. The Center will allow programming to increase from its current pop-up style “Adaptive Beach Day" events, to full-time recreational activities, beach access and fitness programs – providing even greater opportunities for the disabled community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
SCF continuously leverages its strong ties in the community to develop new ideas and execute our initiatives. Collectively, our knowledge and resources with like- minded organizations attract an ongoing base of participants and those who actively engage in volunteering. These positive partnerships create new collaborative opportunities which help expand our network and have long-lasting benefits for community outreach.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In the summer of 2016, SCF launched "Adaptive Beach Days," a program that provides disabled individuals, their family and friends direct access to the beach and ocean, adaptive surfing, swimming, adaptive yoga / meditation and art therapy - like never before. The twice-monthly program at 6475 Collins Avenue features a team of qualified staff, interns and volunteers (from Miami Beach Senior High, Ocean Rescue, University of Miami, FIU and Jackson Memorial Hospital) who work together to stage an entire area of the beach, including a platform of access decks across the sand, tents, beach wheelchairs and other adaptive beach equipment for lounging and shade. Since its inception, the demand for this program emerged rapidly. To date, "Adaptive Beach Days" has served:
Over 2,000 visitors including Miami Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward County residents
Tourists from France, Turkey, Venezuela and Italy
Disabled individuals, seniors, veterans and children with special needs ranging between 5 - 65 years old
