Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Family Autism Center
The Family Autism Center (FAC) works in conjunction with the Family Support Program at The Arc of South Norfolk. In 1995, more than 70 local families called upon The Arc of South Norfolk to develop the center. FAC is a community-based program whose mission is to provide advocacy, supports and services to people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families.
Founded by families in our community, our services are responsive to the input, direction and needs of families. We work collaboratively with all stakeholders to provide support to hundreds of families throughout Norfolk County and Southeastern Massachusetts.
ALEC: Autism and Law Enforcement Coalition
ALEC began in 2003 as a collaborative effort of the The Arc of South Norfolk Family Autism Center and the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office. The program was started with start-up funds from Dedham Savings Bank in Dedham, MA. ALEC training helps foster a deeper understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) among public safety and law enforcement personnel.
Training is available for police officers, firefighters and emergency and courtroom personnel, using curriculum and videos specific to each group. Basic EMTs, intermediate EMTs and paramedics earn 3 OEMS hours (continuing education hours) for ALEC training.
Presenters are First Responders with direct knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders through a family member. The audience hears from a colleague with personal knowledge and an extraordinary investment in the program. The goal of ALEC training is to complement but not replace previous training and to provide additional tools to use in assessing the risk of a situation.
Adult Day Services
The William F. Abel Therapeutic Center is a dynamic and progressive day program that provides individually tailored services for a diverse group of adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Our community includes persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, sensory and mobility impairments.
Senior Connections is a specialized day program that provides services to a group of active senior citizens with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Located in the heart of West Roxbury Center, this store-front Day Habilitation Program for aging adults is inviting and easily accessible by public transportation.
Social and Recreational Programs
The Arc of South Norfolk's Social-Recreation programs provide opportunities for fun and learning in a variety of social settings. The social and recreational calendar is a busy one, with a variety of choices to suit many interests. Sports programs have been active and popular here since their beginning in 1981.
