What we aim to solve
The New England Center for Children® is a private, nonprofit autism research, and education center working to promote a world where autism is not a barrier to happiness, growth, and independence. Our mission is to create a global network of educators, researchers, and programs so that those living with autism may live fuller lives.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Day Programs
NECC has three day services programs that serve children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ages 14 months to 22 years. All programs are full year, 226 days per year. Most of the students in the day services programs reside within one hour of the central school building. Using a combination of discrete trials and incidental learning opportunities, the day services curriculum focuses on communication, academic, social, play and self-help skills. Guided by the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), teachers help young children acquire the skills they need.
Residential Programs
NECC has three residential programs that serve over 120 students ages 3 to 22, from across the United States and several foreign countries. All residential programs operate 365 days per year. While at school, students participate in the full scope of the NECC curriculum of academic, social, communication, and vocational skills as well as physical education. In addition, many students are instructed in the more traditional academic areas of math, reading, science and social studies. The behavioral, data-based program relies on positive reinforcement techniques and all treatments are designed to meet the individual needs of each child. While in their residences, students are focused on independent living skills, leisure interests, recreation and community activities as well as practicing skills learned at school.
Unique to NECC, teachers work both in the school and in the residences. Programs taught in the residence are designed to complement the instruction received at the school and incorporate services available in the local community
Public School Services and Consulting
Developed in collaboration with public school administrators, the Partner Program classroom model was developed in 1997 with the goal of bringing high-quality intensive ABA services to the public schools. This model focuses on working with public schools to develop a comprehensive ABA classroom that meets the standards of best clinical practices, and mirrors the structure and support often found only in private school settings. In addition to providing high-quality educational services, Partner Program classrooms allow students to be successfully included in their neighborhood schools while also building the skill set of public school staff.
NECC also contracts with public school districts for ongoing consultation services providing support to teachers and paraprofessionals serving students with autism in the public school setting. Consult can range from supporting paraprofessionals working 1:1 with a student to supporting a general education teacher in developing classroom systems to promote the education of children with ASD in their class.
Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia (ACE®)
The Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia® (ACE®) is the culmination of over 45 years of research and practice conducted at The New England Center for Children, a leader in the fields of ABA and autism. The ACE® software provides an interactive database containing assessment tools, curriculum, and student performance reports.
The ACE® software is designed to provide teachers, administrators, and other school professionals with easy access to applied behavior analytic procedures and an effective and efficient way to aggregate and understand student performance data. Every lesson plan within the ACE® can be customized to the learning profile of the individual student being taught. Thus, this web-based curriculum fills an enormous need for an easy to access, comprehensive, and rigorously tested resource allowing teachers and schools to provide effective and individualized services to their students with autism.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We strive to be at the forefront of conducting and publishing research to further the understanding and treatment of autism and related disabilities, and use only those methods that show results. By doing so, we can help as many children with autism as possible acquire the skills they need to maximize their independence, and ultimately transform the lives of children and their families.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?

The ACE application is designed to provide teachers, administrators, and other school professionals with easy access to applied behavior analytic procedures and an effective and efficient way to aggregate and understand student performance data. Every lesson plan within the ACE can be customized to the learning profile of the individual student being taught.
