What we aim to solve
The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) was founded in 1980 and while the event has evolved, the mission is unchanged - raise money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The PMC carries out our mission by bringing ordinary people together to do something truly extraordinary.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
PMC
The PMC is a fully supported bike-a-thon that runs through 46 towns across Massachusetts. The PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to Dana-Farber and is the institute’s largest single contributor, raising more than 52 percent of the annual revenue at The Jimmy Fund. The PMC's donation to Dana-Farber funds life saving cancer research that improves the cure rates around the globe.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Pan-Mass Challenge raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through an annual bike-a-thon that crosses the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Since its founding in 1980, the PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors. All are essential to the PMC's goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. Our hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber's doctors and researchers with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The PMC is all about leverage and commitment is at the heart of PMC's culture. PMC 6,000 riders are committed to a significant fundraising minimum so they use the PMC's fundraising tools and cast their nets wide bringing friends, family and colleagues into the fight against cancer. The average PMC rider raises $10,000.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
100 percent of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is Dana-Farbers single largest supporter and is 64 percent of the Jimmy Funds annual revenue. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $972 million for Dana-Farber.

- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
