Ongoing Advocacy

PROVIDING AND INDEPENDENT VOICE FOR PRESERVATION AND THE QUALITY OF BOSTON’S BUILT ENVIRONMENT
BRING PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS TOGETHER to influence the future of Boston’s historic buildings, landscapes, and communities.
PROVIDING UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION about proposed changes to historic resources throughout the city with dynamic advocacy project pages on our website (bostonpreservation.org); share local, regional and national preservation-related news and upcoming events through our bi-monthly e-newsletter AllianceNews; send AllianceAlerts when action from membership and interested parties is urgently needed.
SETTING THE PRESERVATION AGENDA by working with local, state, and federal advocacy and regulatory partners as well as legislators to enhance regulations and policy issues impacting Boston and beyond.
REVIEWING AND INFLUENCING DEVELOPMENT projects that impact historic neighborhoods, often providing public comment or meeting with regulators, proponents, and concerned citizens. The Alliance supports new construction, restoration and adaptive re-use projects that will contribute to Boston's unique brand of culture and built heritage and annually since 1988 recognizes quality preservation and appropriate new construction in its awards program.
HOSTING, EDUCATING, AND COLLABORATING on activities such as workshops, lectures, and city walking tours. In 2020 we launched our inaugural Advocate Certification Training Program, teaching residents to be more effective advocates.
RECOGNIZING LANDMARKS AND HISTORIC DISTRICTS by advancing the implementation of existing legal protections by identifying important historic resources and helping citizen groups initiate their designation as landmarks or historic districts.
LITIGATING, when necessary, to prevent actions that threaten loss or irreversible damage to key historic resources or the disregard of rules and regulations established to protect them.
