What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

General Safety Programs

During our 30+ years of serving the urban community, the BSVM has been instrumental in addressing cultural and gender diversity in the Boston Fire Department, as well as in monitoring and promoting safety services to the disadvantaged and high-risk groups in the city. Groups that include children under 18, adults 65 & over, and minority residents. We provide CPR, First Aide training, Disaster Preparedness education, Bike Safety, Fire Safety education (that includes the installation of free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, A Car/Pedestrian safety program (that includes Car seat Installation Checkpoints and free seats to families in need)as well as other injury prevention programs.

In addition we provide ongong programs to promote public safety careers for minorities and disadvantage youth. We seek to help young people gain employment in public safety careers such as firefighting, police/correction officers, or Emergency Medical services (EMS), while continuing to promote a balanced and gender mix within Boston's safety service departments.

We believe that our multi-facted approach benefits everyone. With increased prevention knowledge, participating youth and their families are better prepared to respond with confidence to accidents and emergencies that may arise in the home and community. And the City of Boston is better able to respond to emergencies by employing a staff that truly understands the needs of public service, and the diverse communities they will serve.

Population(s) Served

Our goal is to prepare high-risk, low income, children and seniors to be better prepared to respond to fire and other natural disasters.  We do this through fire education our indoor hazard house, the installation of  free smoke detectors for residents, building home escape  plans and disaster preparedness kits.

Population(s) Served

In partnership with community civilians, Boston Safe Kids, local state and city police organizations, education is provided to the community that focuses on car-seat, bike, helmet, seat belt and traffic safety concerns. Parents are taught how to properly size and install a carseat  for their children aged 1-12yrs into their vehicles.  Recalled, damaged, old seats are replaced, education on seat-belt usage taught.

Children are taught rules of the road, crossing the street, bike safety, helmet fitting for bike riding, skateboarding, rollerblades, with free helmets.
