Mission

The world needs more good leaders! Shackleton Schools, Inc. was launched in 1998 to tap the leadership potential and love of learning in young people who seek a more challenging and meaningful educational experience. Shackleton Schools is an innovative, non-profit, educational venture based in Boston that is developing a family of residential, college-preparatory high schools and Professional Learning Centers across the country. We believe that every young person has the potential to be a courageous, skilled, and compassionate leader. Our curriculum combines rigorous academic content with exciting Learning Expeditions throughout North America and beyond. Our first high school is 60-miles northwest of Boston on a beautiful 70-acre hilltop in Ashby, Massachusetts. Our goal is to develop a powerful high school program that builds curiosity, courage, and compassion and can be applied at future Shackleton Schools and Professional Learning Centers.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Our Expedition Curriculum integrates rigorous academics, service opportunities, and exciting Learning Expeditions, which take students and educators into communities, businesses, cultures, and wilderness areas of North America and beyond. Shackleton's expeditions typically consist of six- to eight-week journeys, dedicated to learning about particular academic and social issues. Past expeditions have included:

- Learning the Spanish language through home-stays in Mexico.
- Exploring economic, social, and political issues of the U.S./Mexico Border.
- Studying marine biology in the Florida Everglades.
- Investigating and analyzing the intricacies of U.S. History, our democracy, and other forms of government in Washington, D.C. and the Deep South.

In addition, all of our students pursue Independent Learning Expeditions during the summer, based on their own interests and with the guidance of educators to ensure the fulfillment of the students' educational goals.

We seek students, entering the 9th and 10th grades, with the potential and desire to become successful and effective leaders. They hail from around the country, and 50% are of varied ethnic backgrounds including African-American and Latino-American. More than 80% of students are receiving significant scholarships, with an average award of more than $20,000. Past graduates are enrolled at fine universities such as Amherst, Brown, Colorado College, Haverford, Lesley, Mount Holyoke, and Northeastern University.
