Maine’s First Ship strives to use our reconstruction of the 1607 pinnace Virginia to immerse the public in an exploration of the region’s early history, craftsmanship, and relationships, and their impact on our community and environment today.

Summer & Fall at the Freight Shed

We offer seasonal programs which include visits to the Popham Colony site, cultural events such as lectures and performances, themed social gatherings including dinners, and hands-on activities such as model boat building and knot tying. We also maintain a space that can be used by community groups for educational and community building efforts.

The Jane Stevens Visitor Center is located in the Bath Freight Shed in Bath Maine. It has exibits about the history and archaeology of the 1607-08 Popham Colony, 17th Century boatbulding and navigation, and of the 21st century reconstruction of the pinnace Virginia. Inside the freight shed is Virginia's rigging. Outside and in the boat shed Virginia is now under construction, but will soon be at the wharf. Visitors are encouraged to walk the deck of Virginia

The core of our work is inviting people to visit the vessel under construction to participate or observe while being able to hear stories and ask questions about the 17th century Popham Colony. This central feature of our organization invites curious folks in - some as volunteers & some as visitors - and it allows us to engage folks from across the nation and the world in discussions of early exploration, colonization, maritime heritage and more.
