Programs and results
What we aim to solve
America Walks empowers communities to create safe, accessible, equitable, and enjoyable places to walk and be physically active. This addresses existing health disparities across the US and increases opportunities for all community members to access school, work, and play.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Walking College
This annual distance-education program features self-study, mentored instruction, and team problem-solving. All fellows work to expand their knowledge and skills, share experiences, and prepare plans to expand their work in improving the walkability in their individual communities.
Online Education Programs
America Walks regularly provides publicly-available, free webinars and Twitter chats for conversations on a variety of topics. This continuing education offers participants from around the US access to expert knowledge, valuable resources, and information that can be used in their work to grow the walking movement and create walkable communities.
National Walking Summit
This biennial national convening of experts and advocates provides an unparalleled educational opportunity to seasoned professionals, government leaders, nonprofit representatives, and community-based change-makers. The next National Walking Summit will take place September 2017 in St. Paul, MN. Please visit www.walkingsummit.org for more information.
State Workshops
Workshops bring together elected officials, business leaders, and other community members to discuss ways to make walkable streets and safer walking conditions.
Community Change Grant Program
This grant program, which provides awards of up to $1,500 to community-level projects, aims to support and grow a nation-wide network of advocates and organizations. Funded projects will increase walking and benefits of walkability in communities, work to develop the walking movement by growing the number and diversity of people and organizations pushing for more walkability, and make walking safe, easy, and enjoyable for all community members.
Partnerships & Coalitions
America Walks represents the walking movement at the federal and national level. In addition to our advocacy efforts, we are members of a number of partnerships and coalitions including the Partnership for Active Transportation, National Complete Streets Coalition, Transportation Equity Caucus and managing the Every Body Walk! Collaborative.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
America Walks is aiming to make walking a part of the daily routine of all community members and a viable transportation alternative to places where people need and want to go.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
America Walks works at the local, state, and national level to build capacity among advocates and organizations, share and develop resources to support efforts, and strengthen the voice of the national walking movement. We do this through a robust online education program, on-the-ground support and funding, and developing relationships with local, state, and national partners.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
America Walks is a 20-year-old organization that has continued to grow its reach and efforts. Our network of over 30,000 individuals and 700 organizations engage, empower, and advocate on a variety of issues related to walking and walkable communities.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Over the course of 20 years, America Walks has grown its network to include over 30,000 individuals and 700 organizations across the US. Noteworthy accomplishments include the establishment of the Every Body Walk! Collaborative, the launch and success of the Surgeon General's Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities, three well-received National Walking Summits, and regular programming offered to thousands of advocates and organizations on a regular basis.
America Walks plans to continue to grow and develop its programming, expand its network, and find new ways to engage with issues that intersect with walking and walkable communities.
