What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community continues to suffer from discrimination, little and small, in many areas of life. Education of the larger population about LGBTQ people and strong visibility of LGBTQ individuals contributes to reducing stigma, discrimination, and violence. Our organization, like all Pride organizations around the world, works to educate the general population and to make the LGBTQ community highly visible through events and programs.

Boston Pride Week

Boston Pride produces a week-long series of events and activities each June to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ community. Activities include a march, festival, political forum, block parties, Pride Day @ Faneuil Hall, a Flag Raising at City Hall, and more! These events draw in about 1 million people to the city of Boston.

During a time of increased bullying and suicides among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth, Youth Pride seeks to increase respect, equality, inclusivity, and unity in Boston and beyond. Youth Pride strengthens community connections by bringing LGBTQ youth together and providing a safe, welcoming, affirming environment for them to reach their full potential. The program fosters diversity, dignity, and visibility year-round. The team producing Youth Pride events seeks to further develop its program in order to fulfill its goals of engaging and educating the public about the issues and potential of the LGBT youth community throughout the year.

The Latinx Pride program exists to provide educational and social events for the Greater Boston Latino LGBTQ community and its allies. Its goal is to create a welcoming, supportive, inclusive environment for Latinx LGBTQ people to gather, thrive, network, and forge community connections. The program fosters inclusivity, equality, respect, and awareness during Latinx Pride Week in the spring. Latinx Pride also seeks to further develop its program and events so that they occur regularly during the course of the year. The Latino Pride program plans on adding important, critical, and relevant events to the annual calendar, including panel discussions, health fairs, and community forums.

The New Boston Pride Committee, Inc., d/b/a Boston Pride, a nonprofit organizations founded in 1970, produces events and activities to achieve inclusivity, equality, respect, and awareness in Greater Boston and beyond. Fostering diversity, unity, visibility, and dignity, we educate, communicate, and advocate by building and strengthening community connections. The Boston Pride Community Fund was established in 2015 and is currently funded via the JP and Back Bay Block Parties, the High Heel Dash. In addition, Boston Pride commits 10% of all sponsorship dollars towards the Community Fund. Once a year, in support of our vision and mission, we will give back monies raised in our Community Fund to non-profit organizations and grassroots groups that are doing work within our community with an eye towards smaller organizations, new/innovative programs, and intersectional proposals. Through the Boston Pride Community Fund, we aim to offer support and visibility to small and community-based projects.

In 2016, Boston Pride inaugurated its Pride Arts program, a series of events that focus on queer-related art and culture. In particular, Pride Arts ventures to showcase LGBTQ artists, authors, and creators in the greater Boston area, and to connect our larger community with arts and culture, in all of its forms and expressions.

In 2018, after years of working with professional sports organizations in New England, Boston Pride inaugurated its newest program, Pride Sports. Meant to build partnerships with athletes and the teams they are a part of, Pride Sports will provide visibility to an area of life that continues to be the locus of homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. Through sports and advocacy, we hope to foster change and to bring equality and diversity to the world of athletics.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The main organizational goals of Boston Pride, per our strategic plan, are currently to:
- Develop a strong volunteer recruitment, training, and management program
- Prepare for our organization's 50th anniversary
- Create additional events for specific subsets of our community
- Conduct an economic impact study
- Build up relationships with new community organizations
- Hire staff

- Develop a strong volunteer recruitment, training, and management program: the Board of Directors is conducting an audit of our current practices and a review of practices by other similar organizations. Through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of our gaps, we will define options (e.g., external subcontracting, investment and recruitment of part-time management staff, community-based partnering ...) and review the pros/cons.

- Prepare for our organization's 50th anniversary: our organization is launching a major recruiting campaign in 2018 to build our volunteer base for 2019 and 2020 (the year of our 50th), solidifying skills and competencies of our leaders, building relationships with new, external stakeholders specifically for a larger-than-usual set of events and programs in 2020.

- Create additional events for specific subsets of our community: we are planning events for the bear, drag, trans, bi, and senior communities. We are expanding existing programs to ensure their intersectional reach.

- Conduct an economic impact study: we will partner with the GBCVB and the new LGBT Chamber of Commerce to establish this study.

- Build up relationships with new community organizations: our community is growing, and so does the number of smaller, grassroots organizations in the greater Boston area. We will reach out to them and offer our support, especially to ensure that they get optimum visibility during Pride.

- Hire staff: we will leverage the funds saved-up over the last couple of years to hire admin staff, which will relieve the pressure from key leaders and volunteers of the organization.

- Community partnerships: we have established many partnerships and working relationships with a dozen established community organizations. They are supporting us in reaching our goal by collaborating with us on programming and sharing with us their best practices. They also enable us to network with larger crowds and pools of candidates, and to reach underserved populations in our communities.

- Sponsorship: we have revamped our sponsorship program to align with corporate and institutional sponsors' objectives. This has yielded a large uptake in the number and size of sponsorship contributions in recent years, which, in turn, is giving us the financial freedom to reach our goals and develop new or existing programs.

- Reputation and legitimacy: over the past 5 years, our organization has invested in the services of a PR firm to bolster our communication... and we are now ripping the rewards of this investment. With a strengthened public image and the capacity to reach large and wide, we are improving the quality and spread of our impact in our community, which, in turn, brings more people and sponsors to the organization.

Previously stated goals (2014-2017):
- Build an emergency / "rainy day" fund: completed
- Build a cash reserve to support the hiring of operations and development staff: completed
- Solidify existing programs (organizationally): completed
- Develop a strong volunteer recruitment, training, and management program: in progress
- Create a Council of Advisors: completed
- Launch a Community Grants fund: completed
- Recruit additional members for the Board and Committee: completed

New stated goals (2018-2020):
- Develop a strong volunteer recruitment, training, and management program: in progress
- Prepare for our organization's 50th anniversary: in progress (recruiting campaign and early planning launched in October 2018)
- Create additional events for specific subsets of our community: in progress (specific partnerships are being built)
- Conduct an economic impact study: not yet started
- Build up relationships with new community organizations: in progress (specific organizations have been identified for partnerships)
- Hire staff: not yet started
