What we aim to solve New!

The Church has always been involved in orphan care. Many organizations focused on building orphanages during the past thirty years. However, with the economic downturn of 2009, many homes struggled to survive as ongoing support declined rapidly.

That's the crisis that sparked the beginning of Serving Orphans Worldwide in 2010. We realized that while we may not be able to bring every orphan into our homes, we can work diligently to better the homes where so many orphaned children are found today.

Our Mission

Rescue. Train. Sustain.

Although family is the ideal solution to the orphan crisis, we understand that it's not an immediate option for most children globally. That's why we believe our place in the ever-evolving landscape of orphan care is to support orphanages and children's homes. We do whatever it takes to rescue struggling homes from failure or destitution, because we know failure isn't an option when the lives of children rest in your hands. We come alongside partner homes with training opportunities to raise their standards of care, because we believe every child has a right to a safe and nurturing childhood. And we provide the means for our orphanages to pursue self-sustainability, because we want more for them than mere survival.

We stand by what we call a 100% Approach. The money you donate will never be spent on SOW's administrative costs. Through the generous support of our Board, everything from paper clips to staff salaries is totally covered. We even pay the credit card fees when you donate online.

All children are loved by God. Throughout Scripture, we see God's heart for the fatherless and James 1:27 makes very clear the mandate to care for orphaned children to His glory.

Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world. -James 1:27

SOW travels the world to find inspiring ministries that care for orphans and vulnerable children, then we give them what they need to keep their doors open and better the lives of the children they serve.

None of the ministries that we support are owned or operated by Serving Orphans Worldwide. Instead, we empower existing ministries to do the work they've been called to. The process of selecting a Covenant Home begins with an extensive application that gives us insight regarding the ministry's background, operational structure, financial situation and vision for the future. After prayerfully considering their application, a SOW representative personally visits the ministry on the field to verify the information given and begin assessing the needs of the children.

Once an initial visit is made, the SOW team gathers to decide which needs are most pressing, the immediate cost to cover the ministry's deficit, and what SOW can reasonably afford to give. Many factors contribute to the decision of how much will be sent to new partners: the ministry's capacity to fundraise for itself, its local economy, the magnitude and urgency of the children's need, and the potential for a lasting and effective relationship with the ministry's leadership, to name a few.

Upon approval by the SOW Board of Directors, the ministry signs what we call a Covenant Agreement with SOW. In this Covenant, the ministry promises to use 100% of what we provide each month for the cost of caring for orphans and vulnerable children. They also promise to protect each child's rights and uphold their best interest, and provide monthly and annual reports to SOW. Lastly, they sign in agreement to our Statement of Faith, Core Values,

We stand by what we call a 100% Approach. The money you donate will never be spent on SOW's administrative costs. Through the generous support of our Board, everything from paper clips to staff salaries is totally covered. We even pay the credit card fees when you donate online. Every penny you give goes directly toward orphan care all over the world.

Serving Orphans Worldwide travels to every orphanage we partner with to ensure needs are legitimate and 100% of funds distributed goes to the livelihood of the children.

We come alongside our homes in three distinct ways:

Rescue - Empowering struggling orphanages to move beyond mere survival.
Rescue Phase connects orphanages to financial support so that they can offer each child an acceptable quality of life. Rescue Phase ensures that each child has a home, good health, spiritual guidance and education. Orphanages may not be the best solution to the orphan crisis in the world, but we must meet children where we are if we want to see change and many of today's orphans are in this circumstance. A relief effort is a necessary step on the path to recovery, rehabilitation, and renewal.

Train - Providing the training caregivers, administrators and directors need to excel in their unique context.
In this phase, we empower the passionate to do their best work. Before we can introduce new techniques to generate income, fundraise on their own, or restructure their current interventions, we must train the staff to be efficient and economical. This includes all aspects of operating an orphanage, including administration and finance. Once adequate improvements have taken place, an assessment of potential programs can begin. In this phase, we also help homes discover more ethical and efficient gatekeeping practices (keeping children with biological families or foster families, when possible) and exit strategies (equipping children for transition out of the home). We also introduce the Family Care Model during this phase. This practice is designed to create a healthy environment for children outside of the common family circumstance to experience attachment systems, role modeling, mentor/discipleship, and social/behavioral growth.

Sustain - Helping orphanages discover the new methods of sustainability and free themselves from the dangerous cycle of dependency.
We hope that eventually many of SOW's Covenant Orphanages will depend less and less on external support. However, each home is unique and requires a program built to suit their specific needs. With food constituting the majority of most budgets, it is a high priority. Potential to pursue agriculture and husbandry is assessed at each home. In this phase, we also help them to become more of a transitional, healing place for children, and community support center for adoptive and foster families.

A member of the Serving Orphans Worldwide staff visits each of our Covenant Homes annually. This ensures 100% of SOW funding is being utilized for the cost of caring for the orphaned children at the home. It also allows us to evaluate the needs and progress of each home.

The information we gather through this process enables us to assess the current care level of our individual homes and provide improved program development . Additionally, this helps ensure that we are empowering the staff and caregivers to do their best work and move beyond mere survival.

Since 2010, we have supported orphanages in need all over the world to ensure that every child in our Covenant homes has access to a safe and loving home, proper healthcare, access to know Jesus and his love and access to a quality education.

In accordance with our values of Compassion, Grace, Integrity and Excellence, we commit to:

•Pray for the children, their caregivers and SOW supporters on a regular basis

•Strive to increase global awareness of the plight of orphaned children around the world

•Visit and assess Covenant Homes annually

•Encourage Covenant Homes to achieve the best care possible

•Prioritize family as God's created method of care

•Help Covenant Homes explore innovative ways to become self-sustainable

•Foster God-honoring relationships between Covenant Homes and the SOW Family of Supporters

•Give 100% of all donations designated for orphan care to Covenant Homes, covering all administrative cost incurred by separate funding from our Board of Directors and affiliates

•Provide resources from the SOW Family of Supporters and partner organizations to ensure that the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of each child served are met

In the future we hope to move into the Train and Sustain phase with each of our Covenant Homes empowering them to depend less and less on external support and become self-sustainable.
