Clinical Research and Patient Care

Nevada Cancer Institute attracts and serves patients from all over the world through effective highly personalized patient care. Medical services include chemotherapy, radiation, pathology and diagnostic imaging. Services include patient navigation, information/resource center, Illuminations Appearance Center and Gifts, meditation room, art & music room and the Sunflower Caf' (specializing in healthy and appetizing foods designed for oncology patients). Clinical research ranges from Nevada's first clinical trials program to groundbreaking progenitor cell study and novel methods to treat cancer through studies on T cell molecules and tumor angiogenesis.

Population(s) Served

Nevada Cancer Institute is engaged in research investigating the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer. NVCI scientists are working to decipher the basic biology of cancer initiation and progression, as well as to discover and glean mechanisms for potential novel treatment strategies. Molecular mechanisms in cancer initiation and progression, genetics of cancer susceptibility, immune responses to the cancer and the development of biomarkers that allow assessment of cancer progression are under study.

Population(s) Served

The Outreach & Education Department, working from four offices throughout Nevada, provides prevention education programs and classes at schools, workplaces, community centers, senior centers, faith-based organizations and union facilities. Programs focus on reducing cancer risk, promoting the availability of screening services, ensuring that those with positive findings receive follow-up care and providing referrals to supportive community resources. Multi-lingual patient navigators assist patients with needed resources for cancer screening, treatment and follow-up.

Population(s) Served

The Communications Department creates and spearheads the dissemination of material throughout Nevada, through flyers, brochures, booklets, news releases, white papers, television and radio interviews, and the world, through the website. Events such as fundraisers and new facility groundbreakings are carefully orchestrated to inform the state population of new services, resources and medical treatments their state-designated cancer institute offers as it expands its ability to serve more people, with more advanced research, staff and technology.
