Make Art Happen
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Artpace is dedicated to increasing access to arts and culture by providing an admission-free environment that exhibits and champions world-class contemporary art. Our year-round calendar of exhibitions and public programs ensures that community members from San Antonio and the surrounding region can interact face-to-face with artists and the groundbreaking work they create. For art to truly resonate and meaningfully connect with people, it must reflect a diversity of voices and backgrounds. Artpace prioritizes diversity and inclusion by inviting artists and curators from all over the world. At a time of rising rents and diminishing affordable studio spaces, Artpace’s mission of supporting artists in the creation of new artwork and creating more opportunities for artists, especially in Texas, to gain professional exposure is more critical than ever.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
International Artist-in-Residence
The International Artist-in-Residence program annually invites three guest curators to each select one international, one national, and one Texas-based artist for a two-month residency to create new artwork for an eight-week exhibition, both occurring on Artpace’s campus. The residency serves as a catalyst for artists to strengthen and broaden their creative practices while promoting cross-cultural exchange and mutual respect for diverse beliefs and values. Artpace provides each resident artist with studio space, a fully equipped workshop, use of Artpace’s vehicles, access to Artpace’s Archives and Resource Library, support of studio staff, a furnished on-site apartment, a $6,000 living stipend, and $10,000 production budget to fund the creation of new artwork. All artwork is returned to the artists after their exhibition and often goes on to be featured in exhibitions and collections around the world. Each of the artists participates in public programs while at Artpace to engage the community with contemporary art, including an Artists Welcome Dinner, Community Collaborations, and an Artist Talk at their exhibition opening.
Artpace Teen Council
Teen Council annually supports 12 teens in a nine-month, paid program designed for San Antonio area high school students to become advocates for contemporary art and young leaders in the community. Collaboration is at the core of Teen Council as members work together to develop, plan, and execute artist workshops, guided tours, teen nights, and other arts-driven programming to engage high school students with art. The programs they create serve hundreds of students each year. This competitive program has received national recognition from the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, a leader in arts education, and more than 90% of Teen Council alumni go on to pursue a college degree.
Curatorial Residency
The Curatorial Residency invites two curators annually to Artpace for a two-to-six-week residency. Artpace designed the program after witnessing the significant impact that the International Artist-in-Residence guest curators’ studio visits had on Texas artists. The Curatorial Residency provides national and international curators with the time and resources to expand their curatorial practice and discover artists. The program ultimately brings greater attention to Texas artists who often lack access to curators, collectors, and critics when compared with artists practicing in major art centers like New York City and Los Angeles.
Hudson Showroom and Main Space
In addition to our residency galleries, Artpace has two rotating exhibition spaces, Hudson Showroom and Main Space, that feature the artwork of regional, national, and international artists through group shows, solo exhibitions, and community partnerships. The exhibitions, which occur in the spring, summer, and fall, are free and open to the public seven days of the week and are enhanced through free public programming.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Artpace is dedicated to nurturing and supporting the creative process and engaging audiences of all ages and backgrounds with the most innovative art and artists from around the world. The organization’s five-year goals include achieving sustainability and enhancing our service to the city of San Antonio and surrounding communities while honoring our core mission of supporting the creation of and access to contemporary art. Accomplishing our mission means making Artpace an inclusive and welcoming place for all people. Our inclusivity is reflected in our standing as one of San Antonio’s only admission-free art institutions and our history of supporting diverse artists and curators from around the world.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
As a proven incubator for the creation of new artwork, Artpace is ideally positioned to support artists in taking creative risks and experimenting with new materials, scale, and mediums. Artpace provides every artist who participates in the International Artist-in-Residence program with the institutional support to realize their goals, including housing and financial support as well as access to the organization’s network of fellow artists, curators, fabricators, collectors, and critics. We are dedicated to eliminating the barriers that prevent artists from achieving breakthroughs and advancing their careers. Artpace gives the artists complete creative control and remains unbiased during the artists’ creative processes, so the institution does not influence their work.
Artpace offers public programs and activities that encourage our community to engage with our residencies and exhibitions. Artpace is committed to providing one of a kind exhibitions and activities that create relevant and meaningful contemporary art experiences. We have expanded these experiences to feature new public programs that complement our exhibitions and cultivate greater cultural collaboration and public engagement, including inviting speakers from other arts organizations and creative professions.
Artists work with Artpace’s staff to produce unique, interdisciplinary public programs inspired by their work. Programs highlight the creative process rather than the end product, which fosters a dialogue between artists, curators, and the public. Artpace’s building has become a dynamic, accessible space with new programs & technology to broadcast talks, performances, and other special events. The organization has also expanded digital accessibility by publishing virtual exhibitions tours, bilingual gallery notes, at-home art-making lesson plans, and other activities.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our core program is the International Artist-In-Residence program, which serves as an incubator for the creation and advancement of contemporary art. We provide diverse programs such as Hudson and Main Space gallery exhibitions, Teen Council, Curatorial Residency, Open Studios, conversations with guest curators, thematic discussions, and arts education workshops.
Each program reinforces our belief that art is a social force that inspires individuals and defines cultures. We aim to nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists while actively engaging youth and adult audiences in South Texas.
The International Artist-in-Residence program boasts a remarkable 25-year history of supporting the creation and exhibition of new artwork. These successes can be attributed to the unmatched institutional support that we provide our artists throughout their residency. In addition to financial support and housing, our artists receive access to a state-of-the-art on-site fabrication studio and a studio staff specifically trained to address the individual needs of our artists.
Many of the contemporary artists that we support have gone on to receive prestigious awards, including the Turner Prize, MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowships, as well as inclusion in major museum collections and biennials around the world. Our guest curators serve as agents that connect San Antonio to premier institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), Serpentine Gallery (London), Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. Artpace has increased San Antonio's visibility within the contemporary art world via its residency program, establishing it as a vital contemporary arts organization to San Antonio, Texas, and worldwide audiences. Moreover, this proud legacy has fostered a culture of accountability among our artists. They arrive at Artpace poised to create some of the most challenging and innovative work of their careers.
Artpace has cultivated strong working relationships with high school art departments throughout San Antonio. These relationships ensure that Artpace continues to receive a talented applicant pool for the Teen Council program. Moreover, given the success of Teen Council, Artpace has found that past participants are our greatest ambassadors who can help recruit future classes.
Artpace maintains diversified funding sources, including support from foundations, government entities, corporations, and individuals. We are always working to identify new potential funders that align with our mission.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Artpace wants to continually increase audience engagement on a local and global level. We have been making great strides to become a more inclusive and diverse organization. Based on our demographic surveys, we are successfully engaging more underserved communities through our programming. We are also partnering with organizations to feature new programming and attract a wider audience to Artpace. Our attendance figures, which increased by 33.78% from 2018 to 2019, show that we are making significant strides to reach a broader audience. We will continue developing partnerships with other San Antonio organizations to engage more people with contemporary art. Additionally, through a technical infrastructure grant, we now have the ability to produce high-quality live streaming videos of our public programming to reach off-site audiences. Over the next five years, we want to popularize these online resources, redesign our website, and digitize all of our archives, enabling people worldwide to engage with our programming and education resources.
As one of the top artist residency programs in the world, it is essential for Artpace to continue to be responsive to artists’ needs and provide them with the support to experiment and produce new artwork. As the cost of living and materials continues to increase, Artpace will begin adjusting our artists’ and curators’ stipends, so they can continue to produce work at the highest level. We are also going through a process to reengage our past resident artists. Their feedback is vital to ensuring that Artpace remains one of the world’s premier residencies.
