Educational Center for Arts & Sciences
New England's largest Spanish-Language Theater

What we aim to solve
For several years, Educational Center for Arts and Sciences (Teatro ECAS) has heard from English speakers that yearned for performances to be performed in English as well as Spanish, or have immediate translations, as many of our peer Latino organizations around the country have, such as Repertorio Español and Teatro Circulo in New York City. Earphone translations are ineffectual as they generally only have two people speaking and there may be many people on the stage, and can therefore be confusing. After two months of research, Teatro ECAS has decided to explore projection simulcast in English, fulfilling this community demand.
During the next 18 months, May 2018 through November 2019 to test and launch English Translations Supertitles Simulcast to solve this problem.

Improving Young Lives Through the Arts in Providence (ILAP)
Teatro ECAS invites young children and teenage Spanish speaking students from the Southside neighborhood to experience professional theater training just down the street from home. Programming is provided at no cost to the district.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, 85% of Providence’s students were eligible for free or reduced lunch in the 2021-22 school year, indicating high degrees of household poverty. Involvement in the arts can significantly, positively affect student achievement, specifically for students coming from underserved circumstances.
ILAP is conducted throughout the school year in Spanish to increase native language skills. Additionally, participants will create theater productions, working in English as well to decrease reticence and increase both Spanish and English literacy and expression. After-school programs are open to all students but target teacher-identified students (those most in need of literacy-learning support).
