What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
CGA Today Unrestricted Fund
Funds contributed to the CGA Today Unrestricted Fund are applied to the current areas of greatest need at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Academy provides the Association with a Margin of Excellence Needs List each year with the top priorities of the Academy that require additional funding above and beyond appropriated funding. The Association uses this list to allocate resources provided by donors.
All Present Campaign
The Campaign for the Corps, the Academy, and the Coast Guard. The $30,000,000 All Present campaign, an endeavor unprecedented in our history, includes 15 projects that align with the Academy’s strategic goals to develop professional excellence, ensure academic excellence, and promote athletics and physical excellence. This campaign's impacts will be felt in positive ways for years to come - attracting the very best high school students, raising the national prominence of the institution, and strengthening our Service.
Just as the cadets are "strong in their resolve to be worthy of the traditions of commissioned officers in the United States Coast Guard,” we need you - alumni, parents, faculty, friends - to be strong in the resolve to be All Present to help the Academy continue creating the leaders of character our nation deserves.
Bear Club supporting Athletics
The Bear Club is committed to ensuring a quality athletic and educational experience for all of our cadet athletes by providing philanthropic support to CGA varsity sports and chartered club teams. Athletics are a critical part of the overall educational and Academy experience for cadets, as well as, the entire CGA community. When you join the Bear Club you are providing critical resources that directly aid the Academy’s athletics budget and enhance cadet athletes' opportunities for success. The Bear Club provides annual revenue to address the unmet need for two critical areas of CGA Athletics’ operation: cadet-athlete travel and hiring the best, non-billeted coaches.
Maritime Center of Excellence
Building on the success of previous fundraising campaigns - the $5,000,000 Alumni Center and the $8,000,000 L44 sail training boats - the Association completed the historic $32,000,000 All Present campaign in 2018, positively transforming the Corps, Academy, and Coast Guard for years to come. From the construction of a new Cybersecurity Lab that enabled the development of the new Cyber Major, to supporting the Center for Arctic Study & Policy’s Arctic Scholar that has helped grow the Academy as a nationally-prominent intellectual asset, to the building of a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center ensuring cadets can continue to thrive physically - the All Present campaign has helped position the Academy for success in the 21st century and beyond.
In light of these amazing enhancements, there is one glaring omission - the Academy’s aging and decrepit Pine Hall, originally built to be temporary, that supports all waterfront operations.
For the last 20 years, the replacement of Pine Hall has topped the Academy’s Margin of Excellence Needs List as the building currently fails to meet the ongoing needs of the waterfront’s maintenance and training demands. This need presents an opportunity to replace the 1970s-era, prefabricated building with a re-imagined waterfront that goes beyond current needs to envision the Academy of the future - one well-equipped to provide cadets with an unparalleled maritime experience.
As such, the USCGA Alumni Association proudly and enthusiastically embarks on The Campaign for the USCGA Maritime Center of Excellence - a premier facility intended to embody the institutional heritage of America’s oldest sea-going service. The Maritime Center of Excellence will meet a broad range of educational, recruitment, outreach, and waterfront operational needs, serving as the centerpiece for the Coast Guard Academy waterfront.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Based on the identified needs of the Academy, and in partnership with its senior leadership, our organization is dedicated to supporting the vision and mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy;
USCGA Vision - As a military, maritime, federal service academy, we are a locally relevant, nationally prominent institution serving the American public and producing leaders of character prepared for Coast Guard service in a dynamic and challenging world.
USCGA Mission - To graduate young men and women with sound bodies, stout hearts, and alert minds, with a liking for the sea and its lore, and with a high sense of honor, loyalty, and obedience which goes with trained initiative and leadership; well-grounded in seamanship, the sciences and the amenities, and strong in the resolve to be worthy of the traditions of commissioned officers in the United States Coast Guard in the service of their country and humanity.
Our Association provides services to, and promotes fellowship among, the Alumni of the Coast Guard Academy. We raise funds to provide "margins of excellence" support to the Corps of Cadets, the Academy, and the Coast Guard in order to preserve the traditions and enhance the reputation of the Coast Guard Academy. Our members and donors are proud to support the Academy through the Association which in turn helps the Academy teach and train our cadets about their leadership abilities, professional and personal qualities, knowledge acquisition, communication effectiveness and critical thinking abilities. Each of these areas are integral to the Academy's strategic plan to develop leaders of character for our United States Coast Guard.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Alumni Association will deliver best-in-class member service in the areas of fellowship facilitation, career assistance and networking. The Association will support alumni-related activities and services in New London and beyond and will actively engage with non-member alumni, cadets, parents, and other friends of the Academy to continually encourage their connection to each other, the Academy, and membership in the Association.
The Association will directly support programs to increase the Coast Guard Academy's overall cadet experience as well as those that elevate the Academy's national reputation. The primary means of Association support will be to raise and provide funds for programs across all aspects of the Academy including admissions, academics, athletics, and cadet life. The Association will coordinate with and support other organizations or groups that seek to raise the visibility of the Academy and the entire Service.
The Association will provide the membership with the utmost stewardship of Association assets including accurate, clear, and transparent financial information for every dollar received and expended. Further, the Association leadership and Board of Directors will develop a sustainable business plan to ensure we have a strong infrastructure to maximize mission effectiveness. The Alumni Association will pursue an aggressive brand strategy focused on supporting fundraising and membership initiatives using effective communication tools to reach the multi-faceted demographic of our alumni, parents, and friends.
More information about our Strategic Plan is available on our web site at www.cgaalumni.org
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Strong and steady growth within the Alumni Association in the areas of membership, participation and charitable contributions has allowed the organization to make a tremendous impact at the Academy. The organization has one of the highest percentages of participation nationally by alumni and parents in a dues based alumni association. In 1995 the Association completed its first capital campaign to build a $4.5 million Alumni Center located on the Academy base. In 2013 the Association, in partnership with the Academy, Parents Association and Coast Guard Foundation, successfully completed a campaign to build and donate eight Leadership forty-four foot sail training vessels to the academy's Coastal Sail Training program replacing boats that were more than 40 years old. This $8 million campaign provided boats when appropriated dollars from the federal government were unavailable. The current All Present Campaign is the first-ever comprehensive campaign for the Association and Academy raising $30,000,000 over a seven-year period for 15 individual projects and is further evidence of the Alumni Association's growing impact and capabilities.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?

- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
