People Helping People Helping People

aka Volunteers In Psychotherapy [VIP]   |   West Hartford, CT   |  https://www.ctvip.org

Mission

Volunteers in Psychotherapy (VIP), founded in 1998, aims to correct problems in psychotherapy experienced in public clinics and through managed care: there can be limited access to (and severe rationing of) psychotherapy, and a lack of privacy and client control. VIP clients "pay for" their therapy with our Licensed Psychologists, Social Worker, etc. by independently and privately doing volunteer work for the community charity or government agency of their choice. Volunteer work provides clients with greater self-sufficiency and involvement in the community, while requiring some contribution and commitment from clients that benefits other local people served by community charities.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

VIP

VIP provides only one service: psychotherapy, whether for adults, couples or families (including children). We emphasize privacy, so that truly frank discussions about personal topics can take place, in a manner insurance-based therapy no longer permits. No reports are sent to insurers, nor are misleading psychiatric labels sent to become part of people's permanent medical records -- and no external evaluations are done. This "insures" that the only available benefit comes from these truly private discussions; and that therapy can be used for no other "secondary" gains (custody battles, legal issues, entitlements). The volunteer requirement instills an egalitarian sense of mutual responsibility and fair exchange.
