What we aim to solve
In the history of the United States, many brave men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Freedom thus leaving behind their Gold Star Families and relatives to grieve their loss and carry on their legacy. As a Nation, we have done little in a consistent and appropriate manner to honor and recognize the sacrifice made by Gold Star Families while simultaneously honoring the legacy of their Loved Ones. The Woody Williams Foundation addresses this by establishing permanent Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments in as many communities as possible in all states and US territories, providing Living Legacy scholarships to eligible Gold Star Children, and sponsoring & hosting Gold Star Families Outreach events. Our mission is to honor, recognize, and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Freedom.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments
Initially the Foundation’s goal was to establish a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in founder Woody Williams’ home state of West Virginia. Once that monument was complete, a new mission became clear to Woody and those at the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation to establish these monuments in as many communities as possible in all 50 states.
The Foundation provides a place of permanence for Gold Star Families to gather and utilize in honor and remembrance of their Loved Ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the US Military. They are intended to achieve the following goals: demonstrate to Gold Star Families their community cares for them and appreciates their sacrifice while also honoring the ultimate sacrifice paid by their Loved Ones; establish local Gold Star Family communities and strengthen the community within itself through Gold Star Family outreach events associated with each monument location; educate the general public about Gold Star Families’ enduring sacrifices and the ultimate sacrifice made by their Loved Ones.
These Monuments are a two-sided tribute made of black granite. One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom. The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. The scenes on each panel are a reflection of each community’s Gold Star Families and their fallen Heroes. At the center of this tribute is a silhouette of the Loved One who paid ultimate sacrifice in the name of Freedom.
Each Gold Star Families Memorial Monument project is carried out by a local volunteer committee in the community in which the project resides. The Foundation provides guidelines, support, and assistance in all areas of the project. These areas of support include assistance with committee governance, volunteer training and guidance, fundraising guidance and support, project management support, design services, financial services, and on-site support.
Education
Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor; Gold Star Living Legacy Scholarships and Advocacy.
Gold Star Living Legacy Scholarship Program:
The Hershel "Woody" Williams Medal of Honor Foundation is committed to honoring fallen Service Members by helping their children pay for higher education through Gold Star Living Legacy. Scholarships are provided to underserved Gold Star Children; in the Army National Guard, the Air National Guard, or one of the five Reserve Components, (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard) and are not eligible for the Fry Scholarship and/or DEA (Dependents Educational Assistance). Scholarships are needs-based with a maximum award amount of $5,000 per academic year.
Advocacy:
In addition to scholarships, we advocate at state and federal levels to secure and facilitate education benefits for all Goal Star Family members. efforts are aimed at identifying existing gaps in available support and finding solutions to address those needs.
Outreach
After the dedication of each Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, the Foundation is focused on keeping each local Gold Star Family community engaged through sponsoring and hosting outreach programs and events. Events include memorial events, 5K runs & walks, motorcycle rides from Monument to Monument, riverboat gatherings, school speeches, as well as events similar to the Gold Star Family Day at the Ball Park program.
These events provide opportunities for Gold Star Families to come together, honor their fallen Heroes, and build a system of support while also raising public awareness about Gold Star Families. In 2018 we hosted 95+ community events with 23K+ attendees and we gave 50+ educational speeches with 100K+ attendees.
In addition to hosting and sponsoring public events, the Foundation has begun to explore and engage in additional efforts to serve and support Gold Star Families through direct outreach. Through strategic partnerships with fellow nonprofits, charitable foundations, and corporate partners, these efforts include working in an advocacy role to provide a range of services including everything from home improvement for those Gold Star Families in need, to therapy animal placement among Gold Star Families who can benefit from that support.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Initially the Foundation’s goal was to establish a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in founder Woody Williams’ home state of West Virginia. Once that monument was complete, a new mission became clear to Woody and those at the Woody Williams Foundation to establish these monuments in as many communities as possible in all states and US territories.

Once a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is established, the culture of a community is forever changed thus providing momentum for perpetual endeavors which will continually support the mission to honor, recognize, and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
By utilizing each Gold Star Families Memorial Monument as a "forward operating base", the Foundation expands our footprint thus providing opportunities to activate supporters and volunteers all across the Nation. This strategy allows for continued activation of the local project teams while growing a base of support within each community. By building this system of support, the Woody Williams Foundation improves the quality, consistency, and availability of services provided.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Since 2013, the Woody Williams Foundation has continually improved capabilities to reach our goals. As of February 2021, there are 76 Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments (GSFMMs) which have been established with an additional 79 GSFMMs in-progress across all 50 states and Guam.
After the dedication of each monument, the foundation is focused on keeping each local Gold Star Family community engaged through sponsoring and hosting outreach programs and events. Events include memorial events, 5K runs & walks, motorcycle rides from monument to monument, riverboat gatherings, school speeches, as well as events like the Gold Star Family day at the Ball Park. These events provide opportunities for Gold Star Families to come together, honor the legacy of their Loved Ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and build a system of support, while also raising public awareness about Gold Star Families. These events also impact the general public by help educating them about Gold Star Families’ enduring sacrifices and the ultimate sacrifice made by their Loved Ones as providing volunteer opportunities within the community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
