JLSN EMPOWERS the next generation

In partnership with LiveGirl Inc., LiveGirl League is an eight-week program that creates change agents and leaders ready to make a positive impact in their community. JLSN EMPOWERS women in Fairfield County

Our volunteers support local nonprofits that serve women and families throughout our eight towns in central Fairfield County.

JLSN EMPOWERS our members

Through leadership development and training, we empower our members as community leaders and change agents. Junior League women are encouraged to use their League training to create positive change in the world. Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk, Inc's (JLSN) vision is women leading change and transforming communities. We seek to impact our service area through direct service, continually adding new support programs to our communities and adapting to the ever-changing needs of the people we serve.

JLSN is proud to provide volunteers in response to requests from community organizations, supporting our commitment to improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We provide an ongoing curriculum of training for our members and opportunities for trained volunteers to impact our local community and we establish our own programs as well as partnerships with other organizations. JLSN women plan, organize, and execute community service events in Stamford, Norwalk, Darien, New Canaan, Wilton, Weston, Westport, and Ridgefield. Whether reading to elementary school children, serving a warm meal to the homeless, or cleaning up area beaches, our members put their leadership skills to work building better communities.

The Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk, Inc. is comprised of approximately 300 talented, generous woman of diverse skill sets committed to contribute thousands of community service hours annually to our service area. JLSN proudly plans, organizes, and executes two types of community service initiatives and our volunteers are continually trained on skill sets that will help them better support these efforts.

A small sample of projects we have spearheaded or participated in establishing throughout our service area:

Lockwood Mathews Mansion 1965 – 1984: A popular landmark in Norwalk built in 1864 and planned for demolition by the city in the 1950s was saved by JLSN, reopened as a museum to the public, secured as a National Historic Landmark , and The Mansion Educational Program was developed to serve local elementary school children.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk 1980 – 1990: JLSN collaborated with the Oceanic Society, The Norwalk Seaport Association, and City of Norwalk to create a new maritime center featuring animals from Long Island Sound and an IMAX. Members raised funds for the Maritime Center, worked in the Center’s offices, and offered support during the planning and development process. We later raised $120,000 to build a Touch Tank exhibit and created the Maritime Center’s newsletter. In 1989, the League celebrated the opening of the Touch Tank exhibit, receiving a Certificate of Environmental Achievement from Renew America for this project.

Fairfield County Women’s Center 2003 – 2006: JLSN launched the Fairfield County Women’s Center at Norwalk Community College (NCC), committed to promoting the self-sufficiency, personal growth, and overall advancement of women. Its programs focused on a variety of topics such as stress management, self defense, financial planning, personal organization, home ownership, resume writing, interviewing skills, body image, and public speaking. JLSN co-sponsored the New England Women’s Studies Conference at NCC in 2005, and transitioned it to a self-sustaining entity with funding ensured from NCC.

Diaper Co-Op 2008-2013: JLSN launched The Diaper Co-Op with bi-weekly distributions of diapers and wipes to low income families. Mothers and infants were hosted at a Family Fun Day and received gifts for the holidays. Within its first year, over 55,000 diapers were distributed. In 2013, the Co-Op was transitioned to the New Haven Diaper Bank.

Read 2 Succeed 2014-2019: To improve literacy skills of children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, JLSN established a variety of programs focusing on reading aloud to children, making books more accessible, and helping parents advocate effectively for their children’s education. Volunteers revitalized the Family Resource Center at Norwalk’s Open Door Shelter and launched lending libraries at Childcare Learning Centers and the Stamford Public Schools.

Founded in 2019, JLSN’s newest project, JLSN Empowers, works to make a positive impact on the lives of women and girls in Fairfield County. Created in partnership with LiveGirl Inc., LiveGirl League creates change agents and leaders ready to make a positive impact in their community. Its youth-led model encourages young women to strengthen community connections, harness the power of her voice, and work collaboratively to make positive change. Volunteers also support local nonprofits that serve women.
