Lyme Land Conservation Trust Inc
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The Lyme L and Conservation Trust is located in a low growth area. As a result we face several challenges. One is attracting younger leadership. The second is continuing to fund land acquisitions where the State historically contributed 30 to 40% of each purchase and could discontinue support at anytime. We're also concerned that our next generation of leadership may not have the financial resources of our current "baby boomer" leaders/supporters. We also want to attract more kids to our preserves, so no "kid is left inside", and they are introduced to the wonders of nature.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Nature Place at Banningwood
Establishing trails, kiosks, and viewing stations at the Preserve to observe and learn about the magical impact of glacier movements in creating the terrain, water flows, and habitats for wildlife, reptiles, migrating birds and spawning fish.
Tour de Lyme
The Tour de Lyme is an annual cycling event with 4 road and 2 trial rides. There is a ride for all skill levels and occurs on the third Sunday of May. This is our charity fund raising event through sponsorships and rider registration fees. Most of which is outside our community. We showcase Lyme's scenic beauty, variable terrain, and lightly traveled roads.
Trail 53
Astronomy observatory with large fixed telescope - provides place for learning about astronomy and the importance of dark skies

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Lyme Land Trust has a goal to focus on the acquisition of properties through grants or purchases with ones that connect with other preserved properties to create greenways, to enhance bio-diversity or to extend trails or have important waterways or feeds.
We have a goal of attracting more kids to the outdoors and educating them on the benefits of nature.
We want to attract younger adults to leadership positions at the The Lyme Land Trust to ensure the preservation commitment in perpetuity is maintained.
We want to build our endowment to provide financial stability for the Lyme Land Trust under a new leadership group that may not have the resources of the current "baby boomer" leadership group.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Preservation Committee of the Board has a rigorous screening and approval process for all land acquisitions and donations before submission to the Board for approval.
While the Land Trust has hosted many successful programs with our local school system, Nature Place with interactive technology is hoped to generate a whole new interest among kids, parents, teachers.
A transition to younger leadership is underway. Our new Executive Director, Kristina White, is doing a great job and is 40 years younger than the retiring one.
We've developed a specific strategy to build our endowment. It's "no cash to day", include us in your estate plans. We have created a private label Charitable Gift Annuity.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Land purchases or grants generally occur opportunistically. The Preservation Committee is equipped to respond accordingly with in depth knowledge of most properties in Lyme. We have received recent donations of land which have increased our holdings of land to over 1000 acres.
The Lyme Land Trust has many years of experience in sharing nature's delights with youngsters through school trips or scout activities. Interfacing with technology could well offer new challenges. Leadership of the NaturePlace effort is our Environmental Director, a mother, who experiences first hand the nature interests of youngsters. The results are TBD.
Kristina is highly regarded among her contemporaries. Trail maintenance requires many volunteers and are being added all the time. This pool is a frequent source of new Directors.
We have increased our gift annuity campaign to over $250,000 which keeps in line with our goal of long term funding.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Lyme Land Trust has been in Lyme for over 50 years. We're accredited and steward over 3,000 acres in Lyme, CT.
Our woodlands produce fresh air and water for the region. Much of our water is the last to flow into the CT River which provides 70% of the fresh water entering LI Sound!
Our woodlands and waterways are available to the public for recreation. Large tracts offer wildlife bio-diversity. Dam removal and fish ladders offer spawning fish first waterway points of entry to their origins. Those journeys can be measured in thousands of miles as can be the flight of migrating birds prevalent in the area. We are vital to the region
All of this takes money. What have we done:
-Created the Tour de Lyme/most riders outside of Lyme
-Established the President's Circle/donors of $1,000+
-Created the Heritage Society/Members including us in planned giving
-Developing new Member initiatives/area focused drives to fund property purchases
-Created Charitable Gift Annuity/12 sold
